Guest wdenike Report post Posted February 11, 2013 What are people's thoughts on them? Are they as good as pan type or not? And what are the one's that you are using and the cost of them. Thanks in advance. Take care, Willie
azslim Report post Posted February 11, 2013 I have both the Bogen and the Outdoorsman grips, I really like them over the standard panning. Plus you can get a little more height on your set up so you can stand up and glass.
kwp Report post Posted February 11, 2013 It really is user preference. Try one out before you buy one. I personally prefer the pan head much more than the pistol grip.
Coues79 Report post Posted February 11, 2013 Not a fan of the pistol grip. Granted, they can increase height but then again, you can always get a taller tripod. I personally don't like so much gripping and panning. If I get my panhead sitauted, I can touch it with my nose to pan and tilt. Seems to work better personally. Guest wdenike Report post Posted February 11, 2013 The only pistol grip that I have seen seemed very stiff to me, like metal to metal. And the slik pan head that came with the tripod that I have doesn't seem worth a chit. Constantly have to tighten and untighten to move up and down and side to side. Seems ya should be able to set the tension and be able to smothly pan at will once adjusted. If there is such a thing? Take care, Willie
pwrguy Report post Posted February 12, 2013 I think you will find a mix of opinions, it is really a matter of personal preference. I use an outdoorsman pistol grip, but have honestly never tried a high quality panning head, so it is hard to say what is best.
prowlerMan Report post Posted February 12, 2013 It really is personal preference. I like pistol grips personally and I have some buddies that do not like them. I have the outdoorsmans pistol grip and like it alot! You can also buy the panning base piece for it and use the pistol grip for panning and have the best of both worlds. CWpredator Report post Posted February 12, 2013 The outdoorsmans pistol grip head is nice put I have found I definitely prefer a good quality pan head. I don't like having to grab/grip to move it every time. I got the Jim white pan head this past season and love it. Extremely smooth and solid.
JLG Report post Posted February 12, 2013 I started out with a Manfrotto Pistol grip that I loved until I bought a HDV701 panhead. The Triclawps sells these to go with the the Triclawps and that is how I came by mine. I love them very stable to shoot from. I have three different plates, one for the Triclawps, one for my spotter and one for my binos, very easy to go from spotting to shooting. I have also talked two of my friends into the same panhead too so we can mix and match equipment. I want to get a couple other friends that I hunt with the same panhead as well. Not having matched equipment last year probably cost us a 90 to 100' buck. The HDV701 is a great, great panhead and I recommend it highly. Also a huge fan of the Triclawps too. I have 3 and am buying a 4th. I actually, started leaving them attached to my gun all the time, so you can pull your binos off the tripod and slide your rifle into place. Saves valuable time when getting a shot set up. Most of the time it doesn't matter but sometimes it does, Take Care, JLG.

Coues Sniper Report post Posted February 22, 2013 Try to borrow a pistol grip and use it for a day or two as it's all preference as stated above. I MUCH prefer a pan head. One reason for me is I seem to "wander" more with the grip head - as in I have a harder time following a grid pattern and feel I miss spots.
