firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted May 5, 2004 have you seen the ballistics on this gun! 4,225 FPS!!! has anyone thought about using this for coues? the only thing thats not good is it shoots a 32 grain bullet at that speed. i dont think that this is enough to take out a coues, but what if you shot a 50-70 grain bullet? would anyone think about using this for a coues gun?just curoius casey
300 wsm Report post Posted May 5, 2004 I think it is propably a little light for coues. Im not very familiar with the 20 cal bullet weights, so i dont know how heavy you can go. But with the factory weights I would have to say that it is too light.
Diamondbackaz Report post Posted May 5, 2004 (edited) I wouldn't even consider it, or a 223. I have had deer run a couple of hundred feet with a heart and lung shot with a 243 before they fell. Edited January 1, 1970 by Diamondbackaz
coues addict Report post Posted May 6, 2004 firstcoueswas80 Hey Casey, I heard some stuff about this cartridge but not a whole lot." Ya know " that has always been Weatherby`s philosophy, that if you push a bullet fast enough it will do a tremendous amount of damage. I Have no doubt that even the 32grain bullet would be plenty to kill a Coues Deer, But, shot placement , overall distance and wind would play a major roll in the whole process. You would have to limit your distance and be very good at wind drift judgement. I personally would not want to use that caliber of rifle when there is just so many other good calibers to choose from. I can`t stand the wait untill each season begins and I wouldn`t want to worry about if I am using enough gun. I think it would be better served on predetors and small game, but , time will tell! I think I will stick to my old .270 Thank You Coues Addict
Guest Ernesto C Report post Posted May 6, 2004 My answer is NO. Not good enough. Definetly No.I know several of my fellow members use 243's I respect that but In my personal, very personal opinion I think the lowest caliber for coues hunt should be the 25-06. I know a lot of people will desagree,is ok just dont hate me ok? God bless you all. Ernesto C. ===================================================== Why a bycicle can't stand on its own?? More D Report post Posted May 6, 2004 I am with every one else on this one. I just read about the .204 Ruger, the "parent" from which the case was taken from was the .223(.223 necked down to .204). The magazine article was commenting that coyotes are almost too big. Makes me think that if the "parent" case was the .223 that it might not ever come in 40-50-60gr weights. Just a thought(I am not bashing the .223, I promise): If you ask a hard core varmit hunter about the .223 he has a lot of good thing to say, like every thing else it has it's place. He might also say that the .223 is great for coyotes, but nothing bigger. BUT our U.S. military says that it is great against people. Again I have nothing against the .223. I like to shoot it alot. Nice bark to it and ammo it not that expensive.
Elmacho Report post Posted May 6, 2004 I am with Ernesto and Diamondback I Shot a nice mature buck at 50yds with a 7mm Rem Mag and a 160 nosler partition. I was about an inch low and only got the heart. The buck ran about 100+ yrds. When I opened it up, sure enough, there were two intact lungs but the heart was completely gone. Adrenaline does weird things to animals fighting to live. With a .204 you would have no room for error and may end up kicking yourself in the arse if you lost a trophy because you were off a fraction. Although it would probably do the job if all the factors were perfect..........which isn't often. Good luck with the draw boys.
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted May 7, 2004 i agree with everyone. i also think that the bullet is to light, maybe if the grain of bullet got into the 100 + catergory, but then it would be like shotting a 243. i was just kind of curius as to what everyone had to say about this cartridge. looks intresting but not like its gonna be for a hunter at all. casey
