Non-Typical Solutions Report post Posted February 6, 2013 I use turbo tax and have for years. Last year I claimed tuition/books on my 21 year old and it recognized that as an expense. This year he is 22 and it won't recognize it as expense, says I don't qualify. Any ideas, is it an age thing. I don't claim him as a dependent. Side note, I called the tax hot line last night, was told I might be on hold for at least 30 minutes.....................2 hours later I decided to hang up and try calling again. Got the recording that I needed to call during business hours. As usual, the government left me hanging....................
CouesWhitetail Report post Posted February 6, 2013 I am not a tax guru, but I would assume you can't claim expenses for a non-dependent. I used Turbo Tax as well and you can use their online live chat feature to ask questions. They take awhile, but you are "on hold" online and can be doing other stuff and they will tell you ever few minutes in the chat window what number in line you are. They answered my questions for me and I suspect they can answer yours. Go to their website and look for the support options and select live chat (or whatever support option you want). It's free. Non-Typical Solutions Report post Posted February 6, 2013 I didn't claim him as a dependent last year either, and it tells me that even though he did no live at home but was away at college I could claim the expense..........I have not had luck with the chat yet.....guess I will have to be more patient....thanks
DubTee Report post Posted February 8, 2013 you cannot deduct tuition expense for a non-dependent. Not sure why turbo tax allowed you to last year if everything was the same. If your child has income and files an itemized return, you'd be better off gifting the money to him and letting him pay it, at least he could deduct it then.
