Willyhunts2 Report post Posted February 2, 2013 Is it a lost cause trying to find Remington 700 sps 7mm wsm stainless now a days? Been checking out buds, gunbroker, and all those sites and can't turn up a single gun that's not already "custom" for a price of 2000. Maybe someone can point me in the right direction? Couzer Report post Posted February 2, 2013 From what I understand it can not fit in a short action unless its custom. You don't want to go long action because that defeats the purpose of the WSM. I just got done getting one put together and it required a lot a machining to make the 7 mm WSM work smoothly in a short action. Look for my thread on the 7mm WSM, I have yet to find another one like mine (in a 700 short action).
123456 Report post Posted February 2, 2013 Isn't the case the same on all WSM's? (300,270,7), just necked differently? If so, buy a 270wsm and rebarrell it.
Willyhunts2 Report post Posted February 2, 2013 123456, I was thinking about that. Might go the ultra mag route to just for ammo availability.
STOMP442 Report post Posted February 3, 2013 Build it on Savage. There seems to be more room in a Savage Short Action and it can be custom built to your specs for under a grand with a premium match grade barrel. Plus you can do it all your self and not have to pay a smith.
123456 Report post Posted February 3, 2013 Curious how you build for under a grand? Gun is 300-400$, Stock 250-400$, trigger is 150$ and barrell is endless. Please give me a break down of your build. I am interested in building another rifle and it would be cool to stay under a grand. Also I have never worked on a savage action, are they easy to swap barrels with them having a barrell nut? Do they stay as true as a remington action? Didn't mean to hijack, just like to here from guys that do lots of long range shooting and builds.
STOMP442 Report post Posted February 3, 2013 Action or donor rifle $300, Custom barrel, $265 - $350, Stock depending on what you want can be expensive but a nice Boyds laminate can be had for $100 Trigger if you get a model with an accutrigger can be as cheap as a $20 spring to bring the weight down as low as 10 oz or a rifle basix for $85 or SSS for $90. That brings the total to around $750 so there is still a little wiggle room for a fancier stock or higher cost barrel. The Savages will shoot right there with any custom Remington any day of the week. Just ask the Savage F class team. The savages are very easy to build on and they are just as true as any Remington because of their floating bolt head. Head over to savage shooters forum and poke around and look at their vendors for prices and after market options. I have built a number of Savage rifles for hunting and benchrest shooting and have never had one run over a grand.
