Pine Donkey Report post Posted May 20, 2013 My point is how can UA tout victories over Arizona State University prior to 1958 when no such establishment existed? I hold firm with ASU leading the series 30-24-1. Go Devils! You are correct, the name changed to ASU in 1958, and since that time they lead the series 30-24-1. However, ASU was first granted university status by the State legislature in 1937. This was the result of an overwhelming vote and an campaign lead by Grady Gammage. Gammage had the foresight to realize this status was needed to be able to offer accedited graduate degrees. In the same year they received their initial accreditation as a university by North Central Association. The school retained the name of Arizone State Teachers College at Tempe, a name they had taken in 1929. From 1937 to present the series is lead by ASU 36-33-1. From 1929 to present it is lead by U of A leads the series 41-37-1. In 1945 ASU boasted 6 colleges and decided to change their name again to reflect there evolution beyond just a teachers college, and thus they became Arizona State College at Tempe. Although still not called a University, they did hold that distinction from the legislature and they were accredited as such by North Central Association. Since that time the series is lead by ASU 36-33-1. There are many ways to slice it, but back to my original point; the reason the overall series is lead by U of A is not due to all the games they won over Tempe Normal as was stated several times in this post. There are many places you can draw the line that will put either of the schools in the lead. Loyalties to one school or the other will dictate where each person draws the line. That is just one of the many things that makes this rivalry great!
SunDevil Report post Posted May 20, 2013 The lady Devils advance to the Super Regionals as they dominated their regional!! no hitter in game one. one hitter in game two and a three hitter in game three by d escobedo. pretty dominating. it would have been nice to see them put a few more runs across the plate but bring on KY for another home series. They had a good regional tournament. Hopefully they are peaking at the right time and will make another championship run. Many championships are not won by the best team, but rather the team who peaks at the right time and has the best tournament run. I don't think the 2011 team was the best team, but they dominated the entire tournament, and brought home the hardware. Hopefully Dallas can lead them to another one. ForkHorn Report post Posted May 20, 2013 That's not the real actual territorial cup but a completely different trophy... the territorial cup looks nothing like that. What you're looking at is the series trophy sponsored by state farm... they earned it though and good for them. Like I said before... the actual territorial cup only goes to the football victors. What you posted is not that trophy. A quick image search would show you what the real one looks like. It currently belongs to ASU and I like to think it will be in their posession next year too. UA might be in trouble breaking in a new qb.
Redman Report post Posted May 20, 2013 How many times have the two schools played for the Cup since its inauguration(in football), which team has won more of these games? To say the clock only started once ASU took on its current name is a cleaver way to skew the stats in ASU favor.... any time the Cup is being discussed (and not on this board) its always described as one of the oldest instate rivalry games... since 1899. Either way... the two schools are pretty evenly matched in football... all trivial since the SEC dominates college football now.... it would be nice to see one school in the Top 5. Flatlander Report post Posted May 26, 2013 So I just had a thought. SInce this topic seems to have caught the interest of so many on this site. Why don't we put together a CWT territorial cup group and go to the football game together, or at least tailgate together before hand? Then, if anyone is interested, we could put a little wager on the game. Say the fans of the losing team have to dress up like their rivals cheerleaders and take a picture to be their avatar until the next year? Any of the kitty cat fans got the fortitiude???

Flatlander Report post Posted May 26, 2013 This thread was started as a topic about baseball, so why not meet at the baseball games next year. I would be happy to go to the baseball games, but I don't think the two are mutually exclusive. And since this thread refers back to last year's football thread, RE: UA beating Oklahoma State, I think it makes sense. So any of the pussy cats willing to sign up? Redman Report post Posted May 26, 2013 I would be willing in football (as ASU is joke in basketball, no other sports really matter to me)....I have not looked at the schedule and if I/we will have a hunt going on preventing us from going tot he game. The game last year coincided with the jr. hunt and luckily it was at night..... but before I bet anything in life the season has to play out a little... if Ka'Deen Careey stays healthy he is the best back in the nation, as he goes the Cats will go...
