AZP&Y Report post Posted August 16, 2006 The December coues tag finally came, which lead me to a few calls to establish a game plan on how to hunt coues. First was the process of finding some decent optics. I went with the Nikon Monarch ATB 12x56's. They go for around $430.00 and I was able to get them for $325.00 sent direct to my door from an authorized nikon dealer on good old e-bay. Another reason I went with the Monarch's is they have a 25 year no fault warranty pay $10.00 and you get a new pair (no questions asked). I then called Mr Duwane Adams and spoke with him about the upcoming hunt and strategy. He then asked what kind of binos that I had and I stated what I had just purchased. He asked me about a tripod and suggested a model that he uses and I opted for that as well -Velbon Sherpa 600 weighing in at 3.8lbs and he has used his for 10 years. I then proceeded to confirm a date last Sunday for 4 of us & glassing lessons. As many of have already read Duwane's Book " How to Hunt Coues Deer" - I wanted a more in-depth look at hunt strategy for the elusive grey ghost. The alarm rang at 2:30am and off to meet Duwane. We wanted an early start and at first light we had tri-pods and 4 different brands and powers of binos (swarovski, leica, nikon, bushnell) ready. Within minutes Duwane had a group of 3 deer in his 15x56 swaros. I new that we were in for a fantastic day. The clouds held until almost 8:00 am and we saw 2 dozen deer and 13 bucks in 2 hours time. The amount of information that myself and fellow hunting buddies learned was incredible- Duwane (as many of you know) is an incredible guide and has killed many, many deer. If you are a "newer coues hunter" or looking to improve your strategy, he is one incredible resource to the Arizona Coues Hunter. Duwane went on to comment that my set-up was really nice (although not quite swaro stuff) and I have a new perspective on good glassing skills and the confidence to use his methods. You can check Duwane's website (it's listed on coueswhitail.com) and there is more information on his glassing classes... He's getting busy with the upcoming hunts AzP&Y Doug

SunDevil Report post Posted August 16, 2006 So what was the cost and how many people can go at one time in order to split it up more?
ScottAdams Report post Posted August 16, 2006 Duwane is very good and knows his stuff. He is one of the pioneers of glassing with high-powered binoculars on a tripod. He'll talk hunting for hours on end and never seems to tire of it.
AZP&Y Report post Posted August 16, 2006 Elkhunter- No he's got short hair (at least this weekend). Good luck with your Dec hunt. Sundevil- The cost of the class was $200.00 per person (total of $800.00). It may seem like a bit of money, but when you look at it over the life of your hunting career it's a bargain. Plus with all of the gear we buy as hunters- this isn't much in the real world. Also a class of 4 or 5 would be a good number and it allows for the personal attention and detail needed for glassing. I would talk to Duwane about that and he can let you know how it may work with more folks. Scott- You are right about that, he's got some incredible hunt stories. I told him that I really like your clear, crisp pictures that you post on CWT and he mentioned some of your hunting experiences and trophies that you've taken over the years. I was nice to learn some quality skills from THE PIONEER! Good Luck and Glass us some BIG BUCKS! and as Duwane says, " you can't kill what you don't see" Doug AzP&Y
coueshunter Report post Posted August 16, 2006 That is some of the best money you can spend. He will show you tactics/tips and other ways to glass more effectively than you will learn in years on your own. Glad you spent the time. Maybe we should have a CW sponsored glassing day where we set up a group from CW and have Duwane come and give a presentation out in the hills?...............whats everyone think?.............Allen Taylor........... AZP&Y Report post Posted August 18, 2006 If you want send me a PM of your prospective dates: 1st choice 2nd choice 3rd choice I'll call Duwane and see if he can do it. It would have to be a weekend time-frame. We'll see how many 'glassers' that we get. It lasts about a 1/2 day and is over by mid morning... mulie hunter Report post Posted August 18, 2006 AZP&Y the tripod you used for your monarchs where did you get it & how much? I need a tripod for my Monarchs.
coueshunter Report post Posted August 18, 2006 If everyone wants to do this, we would need to get going because once September rolls around, Duwane is tied up pretty much the rest of the year. Sept Elk, October early elk rifle/mzz, Nov. Kaibab, December late hunts then Mexico late Dec-January for coues/muleys.......Allen...........
coues7 Report post Posted August 18, 2006 If we do it maybe we should do it in smaller groups.....cause if we get 20 people there on one trip I think we'd be pissing $200 into the wind.....even if we had a discount we'd still be doing the same....that's just way to many people. Just my $0.

You can own the "BEST" equipment but if dont know how to fully utitilize it you arent getting your moneys worth.
