az4life Report post Posted August 16, 2006 AZoneCam You have hit a lot of nails dead on the head in your post above. Great Job! I applaud your efforts to highlight some of the glaring and blatant conflicts between ADFD's mission statement, their proposals and recent actions. The department is turning liberal and we have to step back to see the forest through the trees. Remember how in 2005 the unit manager recommendations all had the same BS statement word for word about shifting tags to create more opportunity. Several of them said they wrote it under protest, but in the end they did write it to save their jobs The political big wheels will not allow dissention in the AZGFD. We need to shine some light onto the conflicts with precise writing and discussions citing exact conflicts like those you found to force the political cockroaches to run and hide. Janet Napoloreno is probably pulling the strings. It is just the strongarm "Butch" style of politics that he is known for! Watch each others backs too! KGAINES Report post Posted August 16, 2006 One thing we might want to remember, if we don't like this survey or any other things that are pushed our way the only retaliation we really have is to go to a commission meeting and tell them how we feel. I personally plan on going to the next meeting and explain to the commissioners that these questions are leading you to an answer they want, one way or another, also did you notice that when you picked other you could not put an answer in that was more than a few words. I was also told that there will be phone surveys as well with the same questions, and all these results will be used by the azgfd for future hunting structures. I also heard that the the people that did the draw this year messed up bad enough to get fired, azgfd was not happy with the way they handled the draw and that is why there will be paper apps for the spring and I believe both early and late fall draw next year, and it will continue that way until they get a new group to do it. bmf1321 Report post Posted August 16, 2006 I got the survey. It does seem that the GF wants to issue more permits and lower hunter success rates. What I would like to see them do is eliminate the online application process. The online application makes it too easy for people to apply for hunts and checks their work for them. If they went to strictly paper applications less people would simply send in an appliaction hoping to get drawn. Also, paper applications require a check to be sent in with them. This would also discourage so many people from applying. Obviously, it is my opinion that too many people are applying for hunts.
azyoung Report post Posted August 16, 2006 Same thoughts couesdiehard. The AZG&F is definitely looking for quantity not quality. They should have had a comment section at the end of the survey. I also agree with bmf1321 get rid of the on line application! azyoung
Cochise Report post Posted August 16, 2006 I received and completed the survey and felt as though the questions were very leading in that the answers did not allow the participant to answer consisitently in favor or against the process all the way through. I seriously considered throwing in the towel but after dealing with a number of surveys in my job I know that the area they mark as non-respondent carries a great deal of weight when they tabulate information. They log it as (individuals who do not care enough to reply). I agree attendance at the upcoming meetings is the key to having voices heard. I would like to commend the members and visitors to this site for caring about the tradition of hunting enough to participate in the political side of it. In closing I offer this quote - "There are lies, dang lies, and statistics" - unknown author
KGAINES Report post Posted August 16, 2006 I asked the question yesterday about getting rid of the online apps, and I was told that they are here to stay, but they want them done right, that is why the company this year is no longer going to do it. I also asked why then couldn't they charge up front when you apply, AZ state law will not allow that. I guess there was something like 250000 applications in the big game draw from 130000 thousand individuals, 250000 X 5.00, plus 130000 X license fees, tells me online is here to stay and after they get the bugs sorted out over the next year it is going to be back for good. These were approximate numbers I heard. The survey also asks if you are affiliated with any type of hunting groups, it was mentioned that that might show what kind of representation each group has with the public. I am guessing when a group is for or against something ( the xyz group is in support of a new commissioner ) they will determine how much clout each group really has and determine their course of action accordingly. dave Report post Posted August 16, 2006 I would encourage everyone to print out the survey in pdf form from the link I am posting. Write the Department a letter and write out each of your answers in as many words and you want to use. I plan on doing this and I hope the Department gets flooded with written public reponse EXPLAINING their answers. http://www.azodchat.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID...amp;whichpage=2 Scroll down to a post from Delw where he has posted his link to the survey, click on his link and you can access the survey and print it up. KGAINES Report post Posted August 16, 2006 Dave I was going to suggest the same thing, I didn't have a copy of the survey yet. As I have stated earlier they gave this survey to all applicants who included their e-mail, that is not random therefore it is not scientific and I plan on stating that fact to the commissioners at the next meeting, if the AZGFD can do it and use the results to change hunts and hunt structures, I ask why is there survey credible and valid when the ADA survey was not scientific and worthless. Arizona Game and Fish will be the downfall of hunting in Arizona!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! muleybull the only question I ask you is are you going to set back and let them do it or are you going to at least be heard, I had to ask myself that same question last year and I decided I was going to do what I could to prevent it, I may or may not have any impact on what they decide, but I am not going to just let them do it. I can no longer claim ignorance and I will no longer ignore it.
billrquimby Report post Posted August 18, 2006 CouesKrazy: DustyB0: AZ4life: bowhunter4life: Couesdiehard: AZonecam: bmf1321 AZyoung Cochise: muleybull KGaines: I have trouble deciding what you guys are angry about. Is it that Game and Fish might allow more people to compete with you, or that you might have to work harder to take a buck or a bull? What?s wrong with decreasing rut tags to allow more people to go hunting without increasing the deer kill? Have you forgotten that record-class bucks are out there in October and November, too? Is it that you believe you?re not good enough to find them except when the rut has them running around like crazed idiots? I would like to think you guys are better than the average hunter, and that ?a lower quality hunt? should be no handicap for you, even with a greater quantity of hunters afield. Something must be done to stop the trend of hunter numbers declining statewide and nationally if our hunting traditions are to continue. We need numbers to give us the political clout needed to save hunting. Bill Quimby
drgonzales Report post Posted August 18, 2006 WELL SAID Mr. Quimby, What exactly are you guys angry about??? Have you forgotten the management from the AZGFD that got these herds to their present status?? I hunt all over the state and think the animal herds are flourishing. Unless you know the facts, it is very unfair to imply or say these things on a "probably" basis. The AZGFD will not be the downfall of hunting in AZ. It is here because of them. KGAINES Report post Posted August 18, 2006 Bill I have a problem with the way the AZGFD does their survey and the results dictate hunting changes for good or bad and they consider it to be the best way to determine what hunters want, now the ADA does a survey and it is not scientific and does not give a true reading of what hunters want ( according to them ). What that tells me is the powers that don't really care what we think, if it is a vote for them good if it is a vote against them we don't know what we are doing or what we really want or we are just wrong. Bill they could put every hunter in the state out in the field and the good hunters are still going to take the better deer, they might be in a traffic jam out to the point where they start walking because of all the road hunters, but once the walking starts it would thin out quick. That is not to mention the game law violations that would occur and would not be able to be enforced. As I stated earlier there were approx. 130,000 individuals that put in and there were approx. 250,000 applications, how many do we allow to hunt, if we gave all 130,000 people tags does that mean there will be more hunters next year, or will the number be close to the same except now you will have people whining about it being crowded ( probably the weekend warrior type that would be in the traffic or wouldn't walk to far ), you would have a reduced deer herd because even if success numbers were down there would still be more deer taken due to the sheer numbers, and I would think that we would lose access to some land because private land owners that allow hunting or access would have a lot more trouble with the increase of people on their property or going through their property. I don't mind changes and I think that compared to most states AZ does a great job, but don't change just because other states do something, and listen to your best customers, the people that apply and hunt every year, and those are also usually the ones who are taking kids hunting and introducing new people to the sport anyway. This is just my opinion, sorry for the drawn out post.
missedagain Report post Posted August 18, 2006 Bill I am sure that you are a great hunter and can find game anytime of the year, and I am sure that you enjoy talking to tons of people that you run into out in the field, but not everybody is as special as you. I can not find deer in Oct. all I see are heat waves, and I am anti-social, when I hunt I don't want to see lots of other hunters.
