Drew a 6a spring tag. I have very little experience hunting birds in the spring... what are the basic must have call I might need?

What azslim said, box call with a few different slate calls or few different strikers to create diff sounds. A lot of time you can be calling in an area with two calls and hear nothing then using different striker can produce a gobble.

Hard to beat a good box call. Few other calls can produce the volume needed in our big country. You can also be subtle with a box call. They can produce yelps, cutts, purrs, and even gobble on a 2 sided box call.

Pm LittleCreekCalls, he is a custom call maker here in Az and killed a lot of Az birds. He would be able to help out. I personally like mouth calls, I get better and better every year.

I will be doing a seminar the end of March or the first part of April. It will be different than seminars I have attended or put on in the past in that I will get call’s into the hands of all those who attend to use and practice with. I will also do a mouth call training and everyone will receive a mouth call to use and keep and instruction on use. There might be a $2 registration fee to cover the cost of materials to make the mouth calls (which is still cheaper than any mouth call you can buy). The seminars I have done and attended in the past have mostly been talking about turkey hunting, safety, calling, equipment and tips. After the last one I did I got to thinking I would have really benefited from a hands on interactive training when I was learning to turkey hunt. There will probably be an intro all together and then breakout into smaller groups for hands on instructions with pot calls, box calls, mouth calls and tips in hunting. Then back together for a final Q & A. I will supply all calls needed for training. It will probably take place at Sportsman’s in Mesa. I will try to finalize a date this week and then maybe start a pre-registration.

I did this little video last year... I think it might answer some of your questions.. but I think the bottom line is that turkey will respond to some calls and not others so know how to use them all..

Is there a registration or will it just be a show up and attend type of thing?

We are going to do a registration with a $2 registration fee to cover the cost of the mouth call that you will receive and to give me an idea of how many calls I need to bring. But since we don’t have that up and running yet anyone that sends me a PM with the names of those who will be attending and there email address I will add their names to the registration list at no charge. I will offer this until I get the registration worked out with Sportsman’s Warehouse.

Again this is for a turkey calling seminar Thursday April 4 at 6PM at Sportsman’s Warehouse in Mesa.
