gregaz Report post Posted January 7, 2013 Started out 2013 really wanting to stick another pig with my bow. Went out two days without seeing any pigs, but found bedding area and foot sign. Starting this morning glassing southern facing slopes waiting to see a herd feeding on the hillside. With the winds howling, my partner and I decided to try the flats. After following numerous tracks in and around thick vegetation in the flats, I radioed my hunting partner and decided to call it quits for the morning. No sooner had I put my radio away then I looked up to see a javelina standing about 40 yards in front of me. Unfortunately I think the pig had seen me first. We played the you move first game for awhile until the wind changed and he was gone. I saw the herd split and run. I thought to myself, man I have underestimated these little guys. Based on the wind, I decided to follow the pigs which ran to the north. After awhile I lost the sign and gave up hope. It was about 1130 and I was getting hot from walking the flats. I dropped my buttpack and began to strap my sweater to it. As I was putting my gear away, I looked up and saw a pig coming straight for me about 30 yards away. I was caught in the open and snuggled up to a small bush for concealment. As the pig approached, I drew my bow and hoped it would cross in front of me. Of course the pig went behind me and came within five feet of me before stopping. The pig was on the other side of bush and I didn't have a shot. While at full draw the pig must have smelled me and woofed. Its hair raised and it took off. Luckily it ran about 7 yards in front of me and stopped. Still at full draw, I let the arrow rip. The javelina took off full sprint as I heard it crashing through the foliage. Less than a second later I heard a growl and I knew it was done. I waited a few minutes for my buddy to arrive and I we began to track the pig. It didn't take long(20 yards) and their it was laying on the ground.
