Sam Report post Posted December 31, 2012 Cabella's has their meat Grinders on sale. I ordered the 3/4 hp and saved $100. I got it today and it looks great, except the neck seems a little small. The 1 hp is on sale for $150 off regular price. I have never seen them discounted this much. So, for $50 more, I can get the 1 hp with a bigger neck size. 1hp has a No. 22 neck and the 3/4 hp has the No 12 neck. My only experience with a meat grinder is my friend's 1 3/4 hp - it is a monster with a No. 42 neck and I don't need anything that big. Does anyone have a Cabella's grinder - if so what hp and does it get the job done to grind a front shoulder or two? If you need a grinder, they are at the right price now. Thanks for your input.......

azslim Report post Posted December 31, 2012 IMO 1/2 hp is all anyone needs for personal game processing, while the bigger ones will grind a little faster I don't think it is worth the weight trade off. If you are doing multiple animals at once then the 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 are great. I have a little grind to do from a coues, will use my counter top grinder rather than mess with the heavy one. I have a 1 1/2 hp, picked it up in the Bargain Cave in 03 for $203.97 out the door, if it wasn't for the killer price I would have got the 1/2 hp. It weighs about 70 lbs.
bear402 Report post Posted December 31, 2012 I have had the 1 hp for 5 or so years. It never misses a beat and idles through every bit of deer, hog, bear and elk that I thow at it . The reverse feature is nice , but I have never had to use it . We have been putting about 8 animals a year through it and it still works as well as the day I got it. The larger neck size is a time saver if you plan on doing much grinding. It is a heavy unit to move around but I have never wished that I had bought the smaller one.

CouesWhitetail Report post Posted December 31, 2012 I checked and mine is the 1HP.....it's probably more power than I need, but I love using it. It's pretty heavy but it does great work. You could probably get away with a smaller one.
Sam Report post Posted December 31, 2012 AZSlim - I didn't think about the weight - the 1hp is 58 pounds a little harder to carry around. Thanks for the input everyone. I still haven't decided. I also have a $20 off coupon and some Cabela points, so I will break even if I get the 1hp - I hate making decisions like this.
Coues79 Report post Posted December 31, 2012 I have the 3/4 HP and I don't understand how anyone would ever need anything more than that. You will never be able to put anything down through it that it won't handle and handle with absolute ease. Having owned it and used it I kind of chuckle thinking that you would be concerned with it. If the neck is something you're worried about just cut your meat a little thinner..... not a big deal. I would use the extra 50 bucks on getting some bags and tube attachments for your burger.
azslim Report post Posted January 1, 2013 And get Bruce Aidell's Complete Sausage Book, it has about 60 recipes for 2 to 5 lb batches. It is well worth the $25 it costs.
