BASS Report post Posted December 18, 2012 It used to be that if you wanted a camouflaged rifle stock or bow you had two options, take what the factory offered, or try your hand at spray painting. What you were left with was usually a camo that didn't blend into your hunting areas, or a blotchy monstrosity with a smell to accompany the look! In steps Hydrographics, or dipping. It is nothing new, infact this process is how your favorite rifle stock or bow was probably camouflaged from the factory in the first place! But like many things, after a while people were able to commercialize a very customized product to consumers on a one off product at an affordable price! The whole process is a lesson in patience and attention to detail, as the preparation of the item to be dipped is complex. Just like painting a car, many things must be done to ensure the final product such as sanding if needed, degreasing before a basecoat is applied. Next, the pattern is floated on top of a tub of water as the items to be dipped is slowly lowered on top of the floating material which itself has become liquified as an activator is applied to it. As the piece is submerged, the now floating ink pattern wraps around the part. The whole thing is allowed to dry and then a clear coat is applied to seal the pattern. Very time consuming, and potentially expensive for someone to do their own with the needed tools to complete the job, not to mention the rather steep learning curve! Thats when I heard about BeastMode Hydrographics in Mesa, Arizona. Mark has all the needed space, tools, and most importantly skills to take just about anything you can think of, and dip it into a wide range of camos and patterns! I approached him back in mid August about dipping my new Bowtech Assasin in Crye Precisions Multicam pattern, mostly to make the bow a bit more personalized, and to use it to promote my side business which happens to use a lot of that camo for projects. After my successful archery bull elk hunt I had the bow stripped down to its basic components and delivered them to Mark. We discussed a few options I had, and what he had in the works. Unknown to him, I had approached other companies in the past about having other items dipped in the Multicam pattern and each time I got the same answer, the pattern was too hard to dip, and the final product would not look right. I only found one company that was willing to try, they were out of state and offered no promise on the look of the finnished product. This company however was used to dipping rifle components, and was hesitant to dip a modern compound bow. To say I had my reservations about the whole project is an understatement. Paitently I waited, and then soon after I got a notification from Mark on Facebook, my bow was being prepped, a day or so later I saw the newly dipped limbs in a photo he sent me. They looked perfect! But, limbs are a boxy shape and pretty straight foward, the excitement was building though. About an hour after that I got the first glimpse of the riser, absolutely beautiful as it hung drying! The pattern was seamless and looked exactly like the ballistic nylon I use to make pouches and vests for the tactical community, a perfect match! I couldn't stop smiling, here was something that no other company wanted to take on, let alone promise what it would look like and Mark completed it seamlessly! That's some serious skill! When I picked it up about a week later I couldn't stop smiling and dropped it off the very next morning to be reassembled and tuned. BeastMode Hydrographics is a very professional, and customer oriented business that I can personally recommend highly and will be using in the future for similar projects. Marks "can-do" attitude, and experience in his trade is very evident in his work and the final product speaks volumes. Its no wonder he does a lot of out prodcuts for people out of state.Let him customize your newest project, or update your well worn hunting rig for a truely customized look!
