Jaguar-Macho B

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I don't usually post much but this really, really erks me. What do you all think about Macho B and the AZGF departments involvement? Seems to me that they knew exactly what was going on and when things went bad they tried to cover it up, lie and throw lower level people under the bus. I'm sure if things had worked out and the cat was fitted with a gps then the AZGFD would have been all over the media touting how great they are and patting each other on the back. It ercks me that they will throw the book at someone for minor infractions and yet they go and do something like this and try to minimize their involvement. Fo petes sakes, they killed the only wild Jaguar in the state. Greed and arrogance at it's highest!

I clearly remember when this happened over 3 years ago. At that time, I thought it was tragic and still do. I could not figure out how educated biologists could have caused the death of an animal. After reading the recent article, I now see why. Having worked with the Game and Fish one summer, I don't understand why someone would use a wire snare trap to capture an animal which was planned for a radio collar. Obviously, many days went by and the jaguar stressed itself to the point of death. There's nothing wrong with using radio telemetry to track animals. But, big cats are known for their low tolerance to high levels of stress and the outcome is generally death. Game and Fish should have admitted to their mistake, not cover it up. They should have never agreed to this project......

Is a foot snare considered a "leg hold trap" ? Is female jaguar in heat scat considered "sight exposed bait" ?

" all traps must be checked at least once in a 24 hour period" ? Classic " do as I say! Not as I do".

Tragic turn of events for a very cool carnivore that should have been left alone.

Bottom line....they should have left it alone!

Yep why bother with any of them, the few we have left are a blessing, and now were one less.

From what I have heard, G&F are actively tracking another Jag near Rosemont mine... How long before they trap and kill this one? The UofA and many of the people who were involved in Macho Bs killing are now trying to catch another one...

Because if they can establish that it is a permanent resident they can start keeping us out of the area. That's what gov't likes to do.

We are jumping to a lot of conclusions here but there is certainly a lot of he-said, she-said going on. We may never know exactly what happened as far as who authorized what, whether officially or unofficially.

What it looks like, reading between the lines, is that a lot of people wanted it to happen but nobody wanted any responsibility for it should it backfire. I do think the way the department, as an entity, handled it was very unprofessional to say the least. It is unfortunate that the cat died and there is a lot of back-peddling going on. Sounds like the reports that were released were highly redacted to protect some folks. If they were not guilty of something here, they should be completely transparent.

How does the Federal agent whot got referred to the US attorney's office for multiple felonies not even get reassigned after this was over? Arizona G&F aren't the only ones with mud on their hands at this point.

I suspect that there are some pretty high level politics involved that have something to do with the border fence. I really hope there are no more jaguars in AZ. As much as I would love to see one, I think it would cause more problems than it can ever be worth. Look at the wolf fiasco and that a small potato compared to a rare kitty.

I agree with the first sentence "there is certainly a lot of he-said, she-said going on", most of it by the one person convicted and sentenced to 5 years exile from working in the US. Obviously he has an axe to grind and looks like he is trying to implicate anybody and everybody the he had contact with.

I am not defending anyone, but it looked more like something I would expect to see out of the "Red Star" in Tucson than the Az Republic.

The jaguar is a rare treat for anyone to see in the wild. I have urged people who happen to see one, primarily hound-men, to please keep their mouth shut about it and take lots of pics. Also be very selective about who sees the pics. The feds will absolutely use it as a tool to shut us out of more public land. We are slowly but surely getting our back against the wall when it comes to land access. We sure don't need to give em any thing else to use against us.
