Son's Coues hunt

Recommended Posts

Last week I had the pleasure of spending a few days in some rough country with my boy on a backpack trip. It was a left over tag and with direction from a good friend, (thanks Mason) we managed to tough it out enough for my son to take his first Coues. It was bedded at 400 yards and he made a great one shot kill. I was extremely worried how he would do packing all that we needed for those three days, but I didn't have to worry. He was extremely tough, didn't complain and had a great attitude. He kept saying he was going to kill one that was bigger than all of mine, but when it came down to it, he was happy to shoot this buck on the 3rd day. As most young boys are, he had a hard time being patient enough to glass, so he would ask me questions about survival, try a few survival techniques out, throw rocks, ask me questions about life and be a boy.

All in all I was extremely fortunate to spend this time with my son, make some memories, teach him some of the little I know and bond with my oldest boy. We had some great tent conversations, cooking over a small stove and rationing water and food.

Enjoy a few pictures.

Congrats to your son on his first coues. Very cool you guys did a father/son pack in hunt. Do you have any idea your load weight going in or out? That picture depicts you working pretty darn hard to pull this off.

Way to go Houston! Looks like you've got everything in your pack except the kitchen sink. My daughter got drawn for spring turkey and though it won't be a backpacking trip I'm looking forward to spending some time in the woods with her.

Congrats to your boy.

Very cool. I remember a few pack trips I did with my old man. Started those when I was 9. Some great father/son time. Looks like you had a LOAD on the way out. Congrats to your son on a great buck.

Very cool! I can not wait to do that with my son/daughter!

Your pack out looks horrible because of how your packs/rifle are situated... I dont care who you are, that CANT be good for the back!

Kudos to you Dad, and your son, for doing a tough hunt together! You both will remember it for life. Great shot!! I'm not sure I could pull it off.

Those of you who plan to hunt with the young'uns, be sure to make it fun for THEM. Put aside the impatience and die-hard hunter-maniac mentality and make it fun. Invest a little quality time early on...you'll have a huntin' partner for life.

That is awesome! Sounds like you guys had a great time out there - beyond the hunting, things that will last you both a lifetime.

A one-shot kill on a bedded buck is darn impressive too! Huge congrats to your son, and to you for having what it takes to get him out there on a great bonding experience (and hunt)!

Casey, actually I put my foam pads between the packs on the way down because of how steep the hill was and I tried to counterbalance myself going down. At this point it was all down hill. It actually worked wonders. On the way up, the packs and rifle were close to my back and the foam pads on the outside.

Thanks for the kind remarks it was truly a blessing to spend the time with my son.

My pack wasn't very heavy, Even though I was packing for two of us, over the years I've acquired a ton of quality light weight tents, stoves, bags etc... so I was pretty efficient with my weight. Next time I won't bring my spotting scope though. Even though I did get some footage of a small buck at over a 1000 yards away. It wasn't worth the weight. :)

Good advice, I remember my son reciting the whole movie " Joe Dirt "on the side of a mountain while I glassed. They grow up fast, and you never get those moments back.

Congrats on a fine buck.

This sure sounds like a fantastic experience.

I immediately thought back to being a young boy experiencing the outdoors and thinking about "survival" stuff too. ^_^

Your story sure took me back.

Congratulations to your son for being a tough gun while keeping a positive attitude and for making that shot.

Big time congrats to you for being such an awesome Dad and doing this for your son.

I know you must be very proud.
