CouesWhitetail Report post Posted December 14, 2012 That's really cool to see. Thanks for providing the pics and story I do have a question though. It was my understanding that deer hybrids were sterile and could not reproduce similar to how mules cannot reproduce. You said that the oldest hybrid doe had a fawn this summer so that made me think of that. Amanda or anyone else know more about that? No, the hybrids are not necessarily sterile. Here is an article about mule/coues hybrids from Jim Heffelfinger. http://www.coueswhitetail.com/2012/05/tails-with-a-dark-side-the-truth-about-whitetail-mule-deer-hybrids/
naturegirl Report post Posted December 18, 2012 There is what is believed to be a hybrid buck that we've watched for years in a mule deer only area. We have yet to see any WT offspring in this area over the 3 years we have been watching this particular buck. I'm leaning toward the idea of him being sterile because with his large size i would think he would be a dominant buck by now or at least gotten "lucky" a time or two. mattys281 Report post Posted December 18, 2012 I was once lucky enough to see a white muley, up south of Prescott. Never had the chance to see a hybrid though. Great pics, thanks for sharing.
galiuro mountain man Report post Posted December 18, 2012 One of my friends shot a 4x5 hybrid with his bow where I hunt mule deer. Would have been 5x5 but it had a tine knocked off. It was a bow kill that scores in the high 130s to low 140s. G&F wouldnt even come look at it to see if they would consider it a wt or md. I would have because of the area it was shot in.
