coues7 Report post Posted August 7, 2006 I've never spent anytime in the Mescals but everytime I drive past them they look AWESOME for coues especially up high. Has anybody hunted up in there? If so PM me or email me if you don't want to post directly on here. Thanks in advance

azpackhorse Report post Posted August 7, 2006 Are those the hills just off the Mescal-J6 turn off? At the end of the Whetstones? Or on the other side of the interstate?
coues7 Report post Posted August 7, 2006 Are those the hills just off the Mescal-J6 turn off? At the end of the Whetstones? Or on the other side of the interstate? The mescals are in unit 24a.....between Winkleman and Dripping Springs. They are the big mountains to the east of hwy 77 that border the San Carlos Res. COUESAZ Report post Posted August 7, 2006 Well this means two things. You either touched on a spot that no one hunts or a spot that has got folks keeping quite. My bet is the keeping quite.
azdave Report post Posted August 8, 2006 Years ago, the G&F Hunting Reg. book use to have a 'warning' for hunters in that range---had to do with an ongoing 'dispute' with the tribe over where the actual boundary was and recommended hunters avoid it. The tribe must have been getting hunters with trespass issues. Obviously it must be resolved, because that was years ago and haven't seen it since. Now I think the only warning in the reg's is for the Dos Cabeza's---30A ETA: I think it is very lightly hunted
catclaw Report post Posted August 8, 2006 I have spent quite a bit of time in them. It's a bitch to drive in there. Wouldn't do it in anything other than a 4x4 quad.
rabidApache Report post Posted August 8, 2006 I've hunted on the Eastside of the mescals (El Capitan Mtn) during the San Carlos tribal Javelina and deer hunts. Glassed up some decent WT bucks coming to and from the Mtn following does (Jan). Nice bucks, 80-90+inchers. I can tell you from experience that the manzanita thickets and scrub oak is very thick on the Eastside. Some of the game trails tunnel through 8' high manzanita. Excellent WT country, even spotted a few muley's there.

bullwidgeon Report post Posted August 8, 2006 I have seen coues deer down in the river bottom while shooting quackers upstream from Winkelman near the Christmas Mine. They like the river bottom there alot, I imagine there are probably alot more up higher in those hills. Bret M.
