My Rights As An American Report post Posted November 30, 2012 Well, it is a trophy to me as it represents filling a tough tag and putting meat in the freezer for the family! I hope I do not get chasitsed for shooting a spike! Especially one still in velvet!!! Anyway, shot on the last day in 22N at about 7:30 AM, heart shot at 30 yards, dropped dead in its tracks 50 yards later. Sun at the back, wind at the face. Came in with about 15 cows and I had them all wondering what just happened! Quartered by myself and back to Mesa by 12:30. Not too shabby! Thunderhead 125 grain out of a Hoyt Katera XL did the job! TOUGH hunt after the first 11 days of not getting anything but within 800 yards of any bulls. VERY thick stuff in this unit!!!! Wife gave me a hall pass for one last shot at it, so I went up early morning and did the job! Thought I missed the shot until I found what amounted to a crime scene where he bled out!

tjhunt2 Report post Posted December 2, 2012 Congratulations Brian. I'm sure the wife will allow more hall passes in the future after seeing what you brought home. Sticking in there and making a last day travel to Payson really paid off for ya. It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. Thanks for sharing. TJ
THE RIFLEMAN Report post Posted December 2, 2012 NO CHASTISING HERE! They eat better in velvet!. No testosterone in the blood/meat. Deer ranchers never harvest hard horned bucks or doe's in estrus because they want the best tasting meat! Testosterone production is what causes the velvet to shed and is triggered by the same yearly cycles that causes the antlers to shed when testosterone production is shut down!
