firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted August 6, 2006 i have been running between 1.5 and 2 miles with my fat dog 3-5 times a week. as well as lifting weights at my house. i am pretty active at work and am pretty strong as it is but i am working on gettin better. my main thing is i have been working on my legs! when i get the chances, i have been taking my dogs out and my pack with what i will carry in it when i hunt along with 10-20 extra pounds. i am gettin serious this hunting season as it is 80+ or bust so i am gettin ready for a tough hunt. couesdiehard Report post Posted August 8, 2006 Instead of actually getting in shape I decided to read a book by someone who is in shape. You know sort of "fitness by osmosis". So I picked up "Backcountry Bowhunting" by Cameron Hanes of Eastman's Bowhunting Journal. This guy is insane! He works so hard all year round getting him self ready to backpack for a week or more at a time in wilderness miles from the nearest trail. Marathons of 26 miles on roads weren't enough of a challenge for this guy, so he has started running ultra-marathons like 31 miles on mountain trails. I am tired just from reading the dang book! I sure am glad this guy hasn't caught on to Coues deer yet! Truthfully, tremendous book for the bowhunter or backcountry hunter at whatever level. Pretty inspiring stuff. elkhunter Report post Posted August 8, 2006 I'm dealing with the opposite situation than most of you guys! I crushed my knee earlier this summer and lost 12 lbs of my precious oily muscles, but i've been back into the gym these past 3 weeks and gaining a FEW quarter pounds since then. elkhunter Report post Posted August 8, 2006 no need to be sorry guys, it was GREAT! I had ALOT of folks watching me, it was a mudpit wrestling show down in Show LOw at a camp I worked at, so I rode a bike off a ramp as hard and as fast as i could, someone mentioned I got atleast 5 ft of height and the landing crushed my knee, it was tight and i got a great scar and metal plate, makes me look tougher to those chicks In some cases it wouldn't matter about how good of a shape you're in...if you're in nasty shape you could spend all morning hiking one hill and you'll glass all day..which is what you should do! Dodger2 Report post Posted August 8, 2006 Elkhunter...I can relate, I've had 4 surgeries on my left knee. I tore my ACL twice. I lost a bunch of weight, but then since I couldn't move I put it back on and then some. I'm currently running 10-12 miles a week and lifting 3 days a week. I'm increasing it to next week to 12-15 miles a week and lifting 4 days a week. I'm not doing it for hunting, I recently applied for the police department, but I figure it will help me out in the hills.
