Accurate Magpro

Recommended Posts

Anybody try this powder? Seen it advertised as made specifically for the short mag calibers. Was also curious what bullet and grain seemed to work well out of the 270 WSM using this powder.

4831 is Hogdon right? I keep seeing people post alot of good things with the bullets in the 140 grain weight on all kinds of different forums. I think I may start with that grain of bullet and see about the powders.

Yes Hodgdon 4831sc is MY go to powder when ever applicable.

270 wsm

7RUM

300 wsm (x2 or 3)

257 wby

It works well for accuracy and velocity. But, on the other hand I MIGHT have a half or 3/4 # of Magpro at my parents. If I do, come pick it up and its yours.

Thats very generous and I may take you up on that. Thanks. My goal is accuracy first, even if it means alittle slower fps. When I was younger and dumber(more so than now) I thought speed was the only way to go. If you shoot enough, you find quit the opposite can be true alot of times, in terms of achieving accuracy. I want it to shoot flat still but maintain good accuracy. I get decent accuracy now but think my rifle could do more. I'm also gonna get the trigger lightened and action glass bedded. Next time I am at Sportsmans I will pickup some of the 4831 if they have any.

Im not sure its Magnum, It might be hunter. Im not sure either way.

If you can get the 140 accubonds running 3100+, then you're golden. As long as it produces MOA accuracy (which with that round and those bullets) it shouldn't be to hard to get there.

I have tried magpro a number of times with the same results. Never could find the accuracy with it. H4831 has worked well as well as ramshot hunter. The last couple short mags I have worked on loved ramshot hunter, a 300 with 168s and a 270 with 140s.

I don't know for sure but have heard they are real hard on dies and sticky? I would recommend Norma cases and be done with it. I was having a real hard time with Winchester brass. Bought Norma and all the problems I was having went away. I am also loading .270WSM.

The silver cases are no harder than the normal ones to size. The only problem with them is if they ever start to chip you end up with little silver flakes everywhere.

I have used Magpro in 260AI and 6.5-284. It gave great velocities in each and very good accuracy. I really like the ball powders as they meter so well. I had good luck with the 140s in 6.5 and 140s in 260AI. It might be a tad too slow for the 140s in the 270WSM. Try Superformance and Ramshot Magnum.

I use R17 in my 6.5-284 but I shoot mostly 130s in it.

In a hunting rifle, I look for velocity first and then tweek to get the accuracy that I need. I don't need 1/4 MOA for hunting so I don't look for it. Once I find a load under about .75 MOA, I quit wasting time and powder and start shooting for real. Most of the time I end up with something in the .5 MOA range and never look back.

I rarely use 4831 for hunting rifles anymore as it cheats me out of at least 100-150 fps compared the the more modern powders. If you think shooting a load that shoots .4" groups is going to help you kill something any better than a load that shoots a .75" group you are dillusional. The little tiny groups are for winning matches, not killing deer :D
