sjvcon Report post Posted November 22, 2012 Okay ... I've caught the Black Rifle Bug. I just bought a SIG 716 Patrol so I'd have something in .308. Now I want to build my own AR15 in .223 for something cheap to shoot and something my boys can shoot without a lot of recoil. Question is this ... I've read a couple of posts by some guy that said if you aren't a qualified gunsmith and haven't taken a armorer's course you should not waste your time or money trying to assemble your own. I was under the impression that they were pretty modular, and that if you bought good mil-spec parts and had decent hands on skills you could build a pretty nice rifle. So which is it??? I haven't done much work on rifles, other than installing some Timney's that needed to be hand fit, and putting together a nice 10/22 from very high end parts (which I don't mind saying is an absolute TACK DRIVER ... obviously it was the parts and not the assembly). So is this something I should tackle, or should I just buy one somewhere? It is less about the money and more about getting good quality parts. I like working on guns, so I don't mind a little challenge. Thoughts?

123456 Report post Posted November 22, 2012 I am definetly intersted too. Anyone who has already built some have some recommendations on which parts kits to buy and which one's not too. Seems you can get quite a few rifles now already built for less than 900$. just curious if building you own has it's advantages.

sjvcon Report post Posted November 22, 2012 http://www.ar15.com/...assembly/lower/ Good guide. Kinda want to do my own upper too ... I'll have to look into how tough that is.
Coach Report post Posted November 23, 2012 I sure like the Rock River two-stage trigger. I've known a few guys who put together the lower halves with success - I haven't tried it yet. Seems the upper halves can be a little more complicated with the gas tube. It's pretty critical you get that right, since it powers the cycling action. Too much gas too soon, and you're stripping through the cartridge base too early while it's still expanding against the chamber. Not enough and you don't cycle fully. From what I've read, this delicate tuning issue got a lot of our guys killed back in the early days of the AR (M16 in 'Nam) when different burning powder was used to test vs. what was issued. Google "Saga of the Black Rifle".
Kaffer62 Report post Posted November 23, 2012 I built my own AR15 last year with no previous experience. its pretty straight forward. Follow the guide on AR15.com and you should have no problems. You can even go to http://www.midwayusa.com/General.mvc/Index/how-to-build-ar-15-rifle to see a nice overview.
sjvcon Report post Posted November 23, 2012 Anyone who has built one had any issues with part fitment ... that was the one thing this guy who posted said ... something like "if you don't know what you are looking for in fitment, you will screw it up".
