coueshunter Report post Posted August 4, 2006 Great pics Ernesto..............That rattlesnake looks like an Arizona Black Rattler. I happened to see one a couple weeks ago while fishing the white river (upper log) and had never seen one up there before so when I got back into town, I searched the internet and got to a website for Arizona rattlesnakes and it said it was a black rattler. Anyway, great pictures and looks like you had a great time..............Allen...........

Anyway, great pictures and looks like you had a great time..............Allen........... Those are great pic's, thanks for sharin' your good time! I think Mike and Allen are both right about that snake, the AZ Black Rattlesnake is a sub-specie of the Western Rattlesnake just like the Prairie Rattler, and even the Grand Canyon Rattlesnake, they are sub-species of the Western Rattlesnake, which are all different than the Western Diamondback Rattler. The AZ Blacks are lighter colored with more distinct markings like Ernesto's when they are young, and get almost completely black when older. I have seen a bunch up in the woods, even know where there are den sites that house a bunch of em' in the winter. Looking for and photographing rattlesnakes USED to be a favorite past time of mine......until I got bit! Thanks for the awesome photos Ernesto! JIM>

I've seen rattlers along the Black, but never anywhere above about 8,000 feet. Has anyone ever found them in aspen/fir/pine zone up here? Bill Quimby

I have a picture of a black rattler just up the road from the bridge where you turn left to head towards Holly Lake. I believe this is above 8000 feet. I will get my son to post this picture..........Allen..........
