drgonzales Report post Posted August 4, 2006 I have an old 30.06 of my fathers that the stock needs to be refinished on and cleaned. Any good shops around? How much do you think it will cost?
Couesdeer Report post Posted August 7, 2006 I have refinished a few stocks myself and found it to be fairly simple and rewarding to boot. Going slow and steady with a sanding block with progressively finer grits of paper. Make sure not to round out any sharp edges. I've gone down to 600 grit and started rubbing in boiled linseed oil (Birchwood-Casey Tru-Oil works too) in progressive layers. After a few coats, the grain will really start to stand out. (i've done as many as 20 coats of oil) There is a ton of information on the web abiout refinishing stocks as well as recipes for oil finishes. If you have some time and patience, its pretty easy. I've never had this type of work done, but if I did, I'd go with Randy Lawson at Harry Lawson's gunsmithing. some of the stocks they produce are spectacular!
