Pine Donkey Report post Posted November 20, 2012 I have a 06 Chevy 3/4 ton duramax with only 68,000 miles. It has a small gear oil leak where the right axel housing is pulling out of the rear differential. The dealership shop tells me the only fix is to replace the entire rear end. $2000 plus. I have read on the internet that some have had success welding the tube back in, although it is difficult to weld the steel housing to the cast pumpkin. Has anybody experienced this problem? Any suggestions?
Snapshot Report post Posted November 20, 2012 I have welded cast iron to steel in a different circumstance (Non- Automobile) Tig welding. Castiron has to be super heated with an acetylene torch and kept hot during welding. I had someone do it for me and it worked. Only thing about an axle is if there is any seals or bearings in the area of the housing that needs to be heated, and what heat damage may occur? Good luck.
