Are the elk confused?

Recommended Posts

A couple of buddies are on the November archery bull hunt right now and are in the middle of crazy rutting activity. The bulls are bugling like crazy, they are sparing, and tearing up the trees. The bugling is going on all day long? these are the big bulls, not the small ones. They are not coming to calls and they do not have big groups of cows, but they are active and vocal.

What is happening is year? Hope it is still going on in two weeks.

Probably the bulls that didn't get any "nookie" during the rut?

Not sure about that. I had a November archery hunt in 2009. Saw lots of bulls that were solitary or in small groups, but they were not making a peep. There were a couple bulls that I cow called to, and they didn't seem to like it much?

The cows that didn't get bred on the first go around have cycled. I shot my archery bull last year in Nov and he was bugling, chasing about 8 cows and was distracted raking a tree when I put my first arrow through him at 15 yds broadside. Enjoy the action and take advantage of it.

^^^ This. When cows (and does) don't get bred during their first cycle, they go into heat again. Sometimes if there are enough, this can create the 2nd rut you guys are experiencing. As AZ said - take advantage.

I had the same experience last year. They were rutting like crazy and I heard more bugles than during Sept because the weather was cooler. Glad to hear the hunters are able to experience it again this year. Last year there were quite a few people killing bulls during the Nov. rifle hunt that said the same thing.

I have hunted the november archery hunt the last six years and never heard one bugle.

Then this evening heard 3 bugles and the cows were talking like crazy.

They were doing the same in 6A, 2 - 8 Nov. Every morning for a lease a couple hours.

I know this happened last year in 1 and 27. Most everyone I talked to figured it was because the Wallow Fire messed with the cows estrus cycle, thus creating a later, and stronger, 2nd rut. Sounds like it is more widespread this year. I wonder if it will continue.
