justin_birch Report post Posted November 14, 2012 So far, we have had a very successful season. We started out friday with high winds and only a couple does. I was starting to get worried, since we had four tags to fill and we didn't see one buck. Throughout the preseason, we were seeing big buck after big buck and they were nowhere to be found. Friday we got started late, around 7:30 AM. As we were walking up to our chosen glassing spot for the day, we spook up two little bucks. They run over two ridges and settle down. I turned to my brother and asked him, "well what do you think? Do you want to try and get your first buck down?" We decided to pursue these bucks. My dad stayed back where we first saw them and kept us updated on the radio as we slowly made our way to a comfortable shooting range. After going over one more ridge, we crawled up to a spot that I thought he would have a clear shot. I went up first and ranged the bucks at 230 yards. I told him to crawl up and he rested the .25-06 on my tripod. I told him that the lower buck was bigger and he just sat there with the gun on the deer. I turned to him and asked, "Tyler, what are you doing? Put him down!" He turned to me and said, "I cant, I'm shaking too bad!" Buck fever had him bad. He finally settled down and he pulled the trigger. BOOM! I saw the buck buckle. The celebrations began and I congratulated him on his first buck. I then looked at where the buck was and started thinking about how terrible the pack out was going to be. LOL. It actually turned out that my brother's buck has a double eye guard on one side. Turned out to be a cool buck and a great little buck for his first one! Up on the Mountain Me and My Dad Were Very Proud of Him Well there was one down and we had three more tags to fill. Saturday was taken up by my brothers buck and my dad couldn't hunt Sunday. I made a call and one of my buddies came out to help me. My buddy, my girlfriend, and I made our way up the hill, only to see 10 does all day. Another disappointing day, and my hope for killing one of the big bucks was getting lower and lower. Now it's Monday, and the wind was ripping at our spot again. Me and my dad decided to head way up the mountain in hopes of finding one of the big bucks bedded in a cut that was blocked by the wind. During our four mile hike up, we didn't spook up one deer. We sat down and started glassing. Our binos were getting blown all over the place, making it hard to spot anything. I picked out six does feeding down in this flat. This got my hopes back up. Minutes later, my dad says he has three bucks and one of them looked big. We made our way down to 266 yards from them and the waiting game started. We got to our chosen shooting spot around 10:30 AM and didn't get a shot off until 2:30 PM. The wind was holding down these bucks big time. My dad decided to let me shoot the big one for all the preseason time I put in to this hunt. He stood up and I over compensated for the wind and missed my first shot. He ran to the right about 50 yards and I dropped him. The celebrations began while we sat there for about 30 minutes making sure he wasn't going to get back up. We did not want to risk loosing this buck at all. Well as we're sitting there, my dad gets on the phone with my grandpa, telling him we had a big buck down. As he's on the phone, I spot the other nice buck working his way up the hill towards us. My dad set his phone down and grabbed the rifle. He sat waiting for the buck to present him with a shot. The buck finally stopped and my dad shot him at 55 yards! Well now we had two nice bucks down and it's about 3 PM. I made a call to my same buddy, Matt, and he came up with an extra pack frame to help with the pack out. Here is my buck. Another View My Dads Buck Me and The Best Hunting Partner I Could Ever Ask For! Caped Out Now it's up to my girlfriend to make this a perfect season! I'm thankful for everyday I get to be out in the mountains of Arizona, hunting these elusive little deer. I am especially grateful for everyday I get to hunt with my dad, my greatest mentor. I wouldn't trade it for anything!
