CouesBuckhunter Report post Posted November 12, 2012 For about a couple weeks before my Mom's November General Coues Hunt I watched this nice buck. Her hunt came as did that freezing storm. My dad, Cole and I glassed all morning but this buck was nowhere to be found. I decided to hike to a better point and still nothing was up in the severe wind and cold. With that said, I set my alarm for the time I was seeing this buck get up in the evenings and I laid down for a power nap. I woke up to the beeping of my watch, I glanced over and it appeared that my dad and Cole had left for other obligations. So I set my 15's on the tripod and picked up a doe and two fawns, then I started to pan over and there he was, up on a mesa feeding, I immediately called my dad and got them in on him. My mom was set up on the shooting sticks because of how tall the brush was. Unfortunately, the combination of her not being comfortable with the shot and buck fever, she missed him. That night it rained hard and we all woke up to harsh winds and high 40's temps. The whole rat pack was out looking, but we couldn't find that buck. We then decided to change the game plan and go to a different area the next day. That morning my dad and uncle found many bucks, so we left on a stalk on the biggest one. Fortunately the storm had cleared up and made for a more pleasing stalk. The buck appeared to be in a saddle in the glass but on the ground he was on a very thick flat top mesa. Once we got to our land marks we absolutely could not find this buck. Finally my dad crept up little by little and Bam! There he was, 40 yards in front of him. My dad's Cactoflauge camo must have been deceiving enough because he stayed put. The brush was too thick for the crossbow so Cole and my mom snuck up with the rifle. Cole filmed the buck bedded as I filmed my mom preparing for the shot. Seconds seemed like hours, my mom was struggling to get a good shot through the brush and the barbed wire fence straight in front of her. Next thing you know, BOOM! Cole says: "She missed!" The barbed wire strand was shaking violently. Mere seconds later she shot again and there was high fives all around, she nailed him with a heart shot. Me and Cole got some great footage and had a blast capturing the hunt. He was a big-bodied mature Coues Buck, which made for a good pack out. Thanks again to all that helped on this hunt. It was a blast and we got some great footage that will be up on our YouTube page soon! - http://www.youtube.c.../HuntingArizona
