Coues in 36B

Recommended Posts

Well, I picked up some leftover tags for the Coues hunt in 36B for Nov 9th-15th. It will be my first time deer hunting, all I've shot in the past is dove, quail, and yote. I haven't had much time to scout, and ain't looking for anyone's spots, just have some questions about the general area... My grandpa was supposed to take me out to teach me, but he's just not as able as he used to be, so it looks like it will be just me and my buddy (who has no tags). Originally, I was looking at hunting just south of Arivaca Lake, but it seems as though I might be more successful around Peña Blanca, is this true? I'm looking specifically at areas off of Summit Mtwy, as, judging from the maps, it looks as though there are plenty of ridges to glass.

I also have a question regarding glassing... I know to glass certain slopes at certain times of the day, but should I stay on the same ridge, or move around lunchtime?

Check out the Coues hunting with rifle and you will get you questions answered there by reading what has already been posted. Tells more on what people are doing.

Thank you, I've already been sifting through a lot of old posts, I just had these specific questions. I understand the need to glass different slopes based upon weather, my question is asking whether it is more effective to stay in one spot all day to keep movement minimal, or to move to a different glassing spot at midday.

Sometimes there is a small flurry of activity in the middle of the day. Shadows change and deer get up and stretch or head to water. I would sit a ridge and have lunch ... and glass some pockets.

Just have to be in the right place at the right time.

We'll be out in 36B this weekend. Based on the weather, it might be pretty windy Friday and Saturday. Best advice on these days is to make sure the wind is in your face and your looking toward the hillsides/cuts that offer shelter from the wind while you're glassing for deer. It sucks, but you'll probably be more productive at finding deer on windy days.

Welcome to deer hunting. You will find most here are extremely knowledgeable in the ways of the whitetail.

Normaly after ive scouted an area i zero in on particulat areas that ive seen buck during scouting. I will stay looking at the same ridge all day long. I may move a little to get a different angle(20-30yard make all the diferance). In the areas i hunt the bucks stay in the same small whether its a saddle or a cut or pocket. When they bed they are completely out of sight. But in my area they will only bed for 3-4the hours at a time.. so its important to keep glassing. Its easy to get discouraged and think "any thing out there i would have seen by now" but keep glassing and i cant stress that enough. And if you keep looking when they so get up to move to the cause the shade hasa moved or to nibble or walk few laps around the bush only to burrow back into it. And i mean burrow. Ive seen coues bed under trees in plain view down south but i hunt centeral and ive never glassed a bedded buck. I always find them as they are moving to reposition them selves. And plenty of times while scouting ive watched them nibble alittle and once they lay back down completely lose them , i know they are there but they are completely out of sight.

Thanks everyone for the help. Everyone on here seems to really know what they're talking about, hopefully this will help me get a buck this weekend. I'll be out there by 4am on Friday morning, and I can't wait. The tripod and everything is already packed and ready to go, just need to pray for that shot. Sounds like my plan should be to simply find a nice ridge and get comfortable... Thanks again for the help.

Well not necessarily. A lot of these guys have already scouted where they are going to hunt or have hunted an area for many years and know their area holds deer. There are a lot of deer in your unit but I would doubt they are everywhere. However, they can be anywhere and like what has been said before, glass in the shade and this weekend make sure you glass into the wind. Also check the hunt/fish times on Garmin. It is pretty accurate as to when during the day deer will get up and move around. Good luck and let us know (either way) how it goes.

I'm going to be camped (with soon to be friends) just south of the lake on the road that begins in the wash about halfway into the lake. I am probably going to be there tomorrow, late sometime, but definately like you on friday morn.

If you want to hunt that area I'd be more than glad to have you tag along since my other hunting buddy (son) will be busy picking cotton. I did scout the area with a friend who had a tag on the first hunt so I at least know the roads. LOL

I'll be in a red F250 and my license plate is my screen name. Or you can give me a buzz @ 602-499-06 one zero. Make sure you scope out the weather report, it'll be cool.

I just might have to take you up on that, Prdatr. Thanks for the help, I actually might be leaving this afternoon to just camp out there tonight, as it beats leaving the house at 2:30 tomorrow morning. I'll have my girlfriend in tow, but she's quiet, has hunted with me before, and is content by just being out in the middle of nowhere. I'll give you a call later, I'll definitely be dropping by to say hi to yall.
