I am considering purchasing a GPS unit after last year, where the hike back to camp is never a straight line and never seems to be as efficient as the walk out in the morning.

Anyone have any experience using a GPS unit and would suggest a specific brand and model? Thanks.

I have two Garmin GPS and have been very happy with both. My one suggestion would be to get one that has a digital compass in it. I still carry a regular compass just to be sure.

I use an Etrex legend. I've had it for 2 years and it works great. Mostly for getting coordinates to tell the border patrol where to look for illegals when I'm in 36a. It will work well for me in 4b this Nov for elk. If you are in the Tucson area Tucson Map and Flag is a great place to buy your GPS. They have a guy there who will show you all about how to use it.

I wonder how I ever got along without one. I met a gentleman who has a speacial place in my and my families heart. He gave and taught me how to use my first gps. His name was Norman Pint. Norm gave me and my son a pair of the garmin 10's after our first elk hunt. He helped my son harvest a really nice 330 Gila bull here in NM. My family and I have now upgraded to a Garmin 12's and the garmin 76cs. The Garmin 12 is an excellent choice if you do not need a mapping unit.

Thanks Norm for being a teacher of the outdoors , we think of you often. We are sure you are calling in a big one now. Gonhntn

GPS is the way to go but it shouldnt replace a map and compass. The garmin E-trex is fantastic for getting back to camp, truck, quad etc. the gps 72 is great cheap and has a slightly larger screen

+1 on the Garmin GPS 12.

that is what I use, and I love it. I don't need much more than something that will mark a spot, allow me to leave the area, and then return to it quickly. My dad bought the e-trex but that little thing was just too small for either of us to keep track of. I bought him a Garmin GPS XL and it's nice also. No matter which one you buy, it will serve you well. Just be sure to get out in an area you know, and play around with it to get to know it. It took me a couple years to fully understand mine, but now I love it.

I have the Garmin Etrex, the yellow one, and it does what I need it to do. I really only use it when I'm in flat country (elk hunting around Flag, can't see landmarks) or when I'm somewhere new to me. I sure wish I could use it to mark where my archery deer or elk was found, but I haven't had that opportunity, yet.

I have the simple yellow Garmin E-trex and it has served me well. I recently bought the National Geographic Topo! software and bought a simple usb adapter and I am able to plot all of my waypoints on my custom maps. I can also download waypoints from maps onto my GPS. This makes this tool one of the best investments I have made yet.

Yep that software is the best thing anyone could buy I think. Missedagain showed me his, and I played around with it for a while until I went out and bought my own discs. I love them.

Hey Casey:

Dito on the rhino! My wife bought my son and I a couple of them for Christmas last year and they are awesome! Especially for anyone with a small kid who you are taking-out, they are great to keep tabs on them in the forest. I know where he is and he knows where I am at all times.

I've been a little dis-satisfied with the radio reception on them compared to our Motorolas, but other than that they're great.

As you can tell from the posts. Garmin is a BIG seller. I went for the Venture, between the base model and the Legend. It has been bulletproof for the most part and I've carried it for almost 5 years. It had a few issues recently and I sent it back this week to Garmin. They are going to download my GPS coordinates and send me a new (refurbished) unit , with my data loaded for $79.00. Not a bad deal.

If you want to learn about how GPS works and take a quick course, Wide World of Maps, has a GPS class. I believe it's the first Saturday of the Month and cost is nominal. They explain how the gps functions and the features of the GPS in the real world. The bottom line you will be able to venture farther with greater confidence, but as someone said in an earlier post, there is no substitue for map and compass navigation.

Because as i've done it more than once, the GPS has hit the ground and I went , "uh oh". I would most definetely buy the the velcro/clip case for any GPS you buy..... So it doesn't hit the ground (too many times)..
