Killing small bucks

Recommended Posts

This could be a good topic, unfortunately it touches tender feelings to some. I personally do not think G&F is managing the units in the better interest of the deer, Whitetail and Mule deer. We are in a ten year drought (yes from time to time we have a good rainfall) but none the less we are in a decade drought, and more tags than ever. The quality of deer in many units are starting to suffer since the addition to the fourth general hunt, additional muzzle loader hunt, and in some cases another junior hunt. You figure from the time archer season opens until the end of February, the deer are stressed. I asked a game warden last year about the number of tags and his reply was, "I agree we have too many tags and would like to see them cut, but the G&F cant afford it". WOW! I personally do not shoot spikes and forks anymore, it gives me pleasure to know that I could have killed that deer and watch him walk. I like getting out and setting behind a pair of quality binos and watching and searching for that mature deer. To me its not about the kill and not knocking those who want to kill small deer, it is just my small part in helping manage the deer to a better quality.

To the TOOL who started this pointless topic: I would like to know who taught you about hunting, who is the person that told you that you should only be concerned with antler size? I was taught that hunting and animals were here to help and aide us for survival. To only kill a deer because of the size of its rack? I will not tech my kids that. I will teach my kids to be thankful for the opportunity to harvest an animal that provided them a means to make clothing and fill their stomachs. You are pointless and empty for even starting this useless topic. On another note, you are yet just another moron who has to ruffle the feathers of the very people that have a like-minded core belief, the same group of people that feel it is their right to carry guns, the right to free speech, the opportunity to hunt, etc. keep giving the opposite side ammo to use against us and we will keep losing our rights. Sportsman need to stick together, not draw sanctimonious lines through our current rights. Why split hairs, why argue to remove more rights from the current laws? That I even have to type this out pisses me off. Again, you are a TOOL, and won't get it anyway. Just leave.

Nice thing about having 50 states....if you dont like the way things are going in the state you are in, find a state that matches your beliefs and move. Thank God states still have some rights to manage their own state as they see fit.

That's what we need is more Government regulation. You are proving that Americans can not show restraint and self control. We need more people like you in government to tell me and everybody else what to do. We need not to have the ability to discern right from wrong as long as you are around. You can do it for us. Thank you for your help. That being said, I think we should fine my father who shot the smallest deer ever over last weekend. He can not walk more than two hundred yards from back fusion surgery and radiation treatment for cancer. I will not shoot a small animal, by choice not by regulation. It really does not effect me if somebody shoots a small animal. The joy and smiles I have seen from small animal hunters is a hundred times greater than anything I have seen from a trophy hunter. Lets stop the joy of success and put your expectations on everybody else and lets start by fining my father for shooting a dink next to a road. Thank you for helping me see the light and realizing that more government regulation is the way go in all aspects of our lives.

Jbird,

You have done a lot of talking, but we have yet to see any 'proof in the pudding". How about some pictures of big bucks you've killed with a knife, bare hands, or less then 100 yards with a rifle? Or are you all talk and have never killed a mature buck?

With over 7000 posts to my 34 it seems you've done much more talking than I have. I never said I've killed many - or any big bucks. I don't use cameras or bait to find deer. I don't use deer to prove how good I am. I don't shoot baby deer. I don't take " maybe" shots. I have the same box of ammo I bought 10 years ago with 10 rounds left. I put in plenty of work to hit what I aim at. I know my deer rifle. The rest are just toys. My .50 is my big toy. I hunt on the same mtns, mostly on my property, and shoot one round at a deer I know I can kill. I give half the meat away. And I don't think all that much of myself. But I do call it as I see it.

And now I see I have to move on. I'm also waiting on word about where to go. I hope to go back east and help for a few weeks. My job/profession allows me freedom to do what I want.

" don't get hung up on scores. Get hung up on hunting" lark

Where is he anyway?

I always shoot my rifles with the ammo in which I intend to hunt with before I even hit the hills to verify it is still dead on. (At least three rounds). So how you still have ten rounds left is amazing. Not to mention that ten year old ammo can't possibly be the same after ten years as it was on day one. Just my two cents.

Ten shots is a lot of practice? I must be a pro now!

I have known a few people with with their FIRST bull tag and they want to hold out for 350 or better, I call that crazy. I actually think that is kinda funny personally.

I can be kinda crazy and Im glad I could give u something to laugh about. Just because I've held out on 2 bull hunts for a 300+ish (my goal isnt that far out there) and probably have passed or drew back on at least 20-30 bucks & bulls (maybe more I don't keep track) doesn't mean crap. I've eaten tag soup countless times but I'd rather take something I feel is right for me. Like I tell people I have a bit of experience hunting but not killing.

To each their own unless a law is made which we all can probably do without.

I completely agree with you and a 300ish is a realistic goal for someone with their first tag, as in my post I was talking about quite a different class animal. 350 or better is quite a big difference than 300ish. Also yes, hunters do decide what is right for themselves as they should, I love America! My whole point is that without harvesting animals it has an affect on overall skills. Yes, someone who makes a million stalks, gets within range, and passes on animals will get very good at stalking. But when they actually seal the deal what are they going to do about packing it out, meat care, knife skills, and so forth. The point I am trying to drive home is that ,as with many things, progression is very important. I feel that by taking advantage of opportunities is a great means of fine tuning skills and becoming proficient in all aspects of hunting. I have personally progressed in my caping skills by caping animals im not even going to mount, as well as knife skills, and meat processing. For hunters that are just starting out taking advantage of some of the first opportunities is a great way to build a foundation of becoming proficient in all skills involved with hunting. For veteran hunters that have killed more big game than years they have been alive and they are in a dry spell on harvests, its not a bad thing to take an animal just to keep up on your skills and for the experience. Every animal I harvest I learn something new from. This is just my personal opinion and everyone is entitled to their own. If new hunters want to hold out and pass on opportunities that is their right to do so, but they will lack in many skills and miss many sweet memories in the long run.

There are some really good debates on the forum right now! I personally would love to see a rule that requires a minimum of 3 points on at least one antler. Can you imagine what it would do to the quality of deer? The spikes and 2-points get absolutely slaughtered on these first hunts. Since ethics are such a hot topic right now, how about the ethics of letting a young deer wipe the milk off his lips and at least reach adulthood and breed a few times before we take him out. Nothing against meat hunters if that is really all your in it for, I love the meat as much as anyone, but if you are in it for a trophy, show a little restraint and help manage the quality of the deer a bit by laying off the jevenile deer. I am sure this idea would throw the G&F harvest objectives out of wack and they would have to issue twice as many tags to meet their object and then it really would be WWIII out there. This topic has the potential of getting hot fast!

the 3 pt rule will give you More small deer. for good genetics the best thing to do is shoot spikes and maintain a 30-100 buck to doe ratio. i am absolutely against a 3 pt rule. unless they sell spike tags over the counter like lion tags.

I really think that every situation is differant. For example this past weekend I took a co-worker and his friend out on what was both their first ever deer tags. First legal deer would have been the best thing in the world to them. My brother also had this tag and I hunted with him on Sunday and theres no way he would settle on a forkie. Also, if a spike steps within bow range on Dec. 31st you better believe Im letting the arrow fly but the very next day on Jan. 1st theres no way Im shooting that same spike.

I think the hunt is up to the hunter and if a first time hunter or a long time hunter takes out a spike, oh well, that is is their accomplishment. A succussful hunt is a successful hunt wheather you tag a big ol' toad or a little spike. Also, as to the topic of deer qualitly, I've heard from many people and read that a buck with good genes shouldn't be a spike even in his first years. Personally, I've never shot a spike or a fork but thats because I had good people teaching me to hunt and have been in the right place at the right time I guess. But if AZG&F really wants to bring more quallity deer to the table they will cut the number of tags. Just thought i would add my two cents HAHA!

Joey - Welcome and good luck on your hunt. This site is not that way 99% of the time. Every now and then a heated subject comes up, which results in a lot of feelings being put out there (which is why this thread is so long). Stick around and you'll see this topic is the exception and not the rule for CWT :)
