bojangles Report post Posted November 2, 2012 Oh good grief. this makes me sick. I'm gonna shoot whatever i want as long as it's legal. You can't eat antlers, and the youngun's sure are tasty. I could care less how big the antlers are on somebody's deer. If they're happy with it, that's all that matters. If you're holding out for 120, good luck! If you're holding out for a spike, then good luck! You need to go back to SanFrancisco where you belong, and dig into a veggie burger with a side of sea kelp and wash it down with organic green tea. Hey, ducks don't have antlers, is it ok to shoot them? Hey, i think i'm gonna tune into duck dynasty, i wonder what Phil would have to say about this? Does a steak from a 120 inch buck taste better than a steak from a fork-horn?

D-Math Report post Posted November 2, 2012 This is some funny stuff. DOES IT REALLY MATTER WHAT ANYONE SHOOTS ? There are still great deer killed every year and if you spend the time behind the glass you could have your chance too. I was raised in a home you shoot the first thing with antlers on his head I, YES I choose what i want to kill.I chose to eat a unit 10 bull tag thats my choice. If i kill a spike thats my choice no one else's.But with that said the big whitey's eat as good as the little ones.JUST SAYING! And a trophy is in the eye of the beholder.

DotShot Report post Posted November 2, 2012 I'm going to chime in on this as I think its an interesting subject to discuss. During the first October hunt I took my father (74 and has never killed a Coues) and my wife's boss (had never even fired a round at a deer in his life) down to 36c hoping for a chance at a buck. Opening morning I glassed up a bachelor herd of 4 bucks (3 forkies and a spike), my dad picked out the biggest of the forkies and dropped the hammer on him at 503 yards. Later that afternoon one of my friends who was with us to help glass glassed up 2 spikes at about 470 yards and as luck would have it they made there way right to us and gave my wife's boss a broadside shot at 180 yards. He missed the first shot and connected on the 2nd, and let me tell you you'd have though he had just killed a monster by the way he reacted. My point is simply this, not all of us who choose to hunt are after trophy bucks and we'll settle for whatever comes our way. I was raised to never pass up a buck because you never know if that is the only set of antlers you'll see. Some people have moved on to the trophy aspect of hunting and that too is OK just remember not all of us look at the animal as the trophy but rather the entire experience.

rigutierrez Report post Posted November 2, 2012 Killing spikes and forkies should be illegal even at long range just show off. :-) This appears to be a clear attack on another member. Shooting Forkies or Spikes would have been a good debate topic.
stanley Report post Posted November 2, 2012 I understand the "troll" thing. You guys think its all aout you. It's what you guys think that matters and anyone who goes against you is wrong. I get that. Years ago it was illegal to kill spikes. Is it a great accomplishment to kill a spike or forkie? Maybe for a kid on his first hunt. But all the effort that you guys (advanced members) put in and you come home with a spike or little fork? Anyone can kill a spike. Act like you talk big hunters. I don't necessarily see killing ANYTHING as a 'great accomplishment', Jbird. I don't think it makes me accomplished to kill something. I just think it is something fun that I like to do. When I go hunting with my friends or kids, I just like to have a good time and try to fill my tag or help them fill theirs. It's fun, I get to be outside where I love to be, and I get to be with folks I know and love. Brings me back to my childhood, and I enjoy that. Kind of like a homecoming each year......That's all it is to me. "don't get hung up on scores. Get hung up on hunting" lark Where is he anyway? BTW; I find it a bit ironic that you quoted Lark's words above. Isn't what he was saying a bit contradictory to your original point in this thread? Either way, this is a great debate! Opinions galore.... Happy hunting all! S. PS: Not sure what state you are in, but here in AZ it has never been illegal to kill spikes. At least not in the past 40 years or so.....
JeredMD Report post Posted November 2, 2012 I take what I can get. If I have to go home with a spike, so do it. If i go home with a trophy, that is awesome. I go out to enjoy the outdoors and I believe we should be allowed to take what we can. If someone whats to argue that spikes shouldn't be shot and use the financial debate that its cheaper to get a T-Bone in the store, then that is fine, dont shoot a spike. You can go home empty handed. I think there is a lot to learn and experience wtih close friends and love ones in the outdoors. That is something you cannot put a price on. I got a spike this year, and it was my first CWT. I am very excited!
Bandido243 Report post Posted November 2, 2012 Wow this is crazy! Ive killed a couple "meat bucks" like on the last day. I don't like doing it though. But sometimes a fat little forky is better than nothing. I always at least get a chance at a bigger buck. Or at least see one. Getting on it is another thing. I have a question for STOMP. How long did it take for the bullet to get there? I've been using my .243 since '80 with no scope. But the older I get the slower I get and my eyeballs don't work like they used to. Someday I may make a move towards a different setup to reach out more.
hesbinrubn Report post Posted November 2, 2012 This is awesome 7 pages! I understand all the effects with antler limits, harvesting does, or balancing a high buck to doe ratio. What I don't understand is a lot of people who have there first coues hunt and try to hold out for a 90 inch buck when they have opportunities at other bucks. I have known a few people with with their FIRST bull tag and they want to hold out for 350 or better, I call that crazy. I actually think that is kinda funny personally. I just harvested a spike coues last day of the season. That was the 2nd buck I had seen. For me it was a tough hunt. This spike is my 3rd whitetail. I haven't harvested anything since Jan 2011 which was a pig with my bow. In AZ I have killed 2 antelope, 1 elk, 1 turkey, 3 whitetails, 7 pigs, 1 mule deer. In UT killed 1 mule deer. The reason i killed that spike is because i do not consider myself a veteran hunter yet and it was a tough hunt. Yeah if I would have seen a 3x3 and that spike I would have passed on the spike. My point is limits should be placed on yourself personally, and if its your first elk hunt and are going to hold out for a 350 bull then thats your choice. I got the chance to hunt with my dad and shoot that spike which will be a great memory. I just think that until you are an accomplished hunter you need to get what you can for the experience and knownledge gained by actually harvesting animals. Putting antler limits on coues will be hard because of verification. They are so small that great optics are needed to tell which points are where. Not everyone has great optics or gets real close to tell what each rack has. There are lots of people that shoot bucks and later find out that it has more/less points than they had thought. Everyone wants a unit with all big bucks, but everyone NEEDS experience.
