elkaholic Report post Posted November 2, 2012 . Years ago it was illegal to kill spikes. . I'd like for you to take the time to show where you got this info- as long as I've been hunting its been a spike- even one horn - something like if a ring will fit on it its legal also yes its a big accomplishmentto put meat on the table - i personnelly pass on spikes but sometimes think - dang i got an empty freezer now - when i do not fill the tag - kinda like this yr ! DesertBull Report post Posted November 2, 2012 I don't for hunt for the challenge, the sport or the bragging rights of inches of antler. I hunt because I like to kill **** and eat it.

naturegirl Report post Posted November 2, 2012 I think your point is opinion is valid and one I actually agree with, but its just the way you present it. I'm at 4 years of hunting my butt off I would say 3-5 weeks of combined hunting trips per year and I have yet to tag a deer or elk despite all of this. I choose not to shoot young animals. This is my personal choice and what I feel is right for me BUT I know I'm in the minority. Maybe I will lower my personal standard to get one under my belt but this is.after a long time of some serious hunting. I seriously doubt I will do that but who knows. Brian Payne Report post Posted November 2, 2012 Brian Payne, on November 01 2012 - 01:02 PM, said: There are some really good debates on the forum right now! I personally would love to see a rule that requires a minimum of 3 points on at least one antler. Can you imagine what it would do to the quality of deer? The spikes and 2-points get absolutely slaughtered on these first hunts. Well recently a 2x2 was posted on this forum that scored 109...and I would LOVE TO SHOOT!! I guess that thing would have to die of old age under a 3 pt rule... Plus there is no guarantee that a 2pt or spike will EVER develop into a 3pt... those deer would breed with the does and their genetics would pass along. Spike and forks have ALWAYS been slaughtered on the first hunts... I am not a biologist but I would bet that over 90% of coues deer bucks would grow into 3 pts if they were able to get old enough. Large 2-points is definately the exception just like large 5-point bulls happen but are also the exception. I know that spikes and two-points have ALWAYS been slaughtered in the early hunts. The point is that there would be more trophy class deer if there was a 3-pt rule in some units and they didn't get slaughtered. Would you really rather make sure that a few big 2-points don't die of old age than have more big bucks?

oz31p Report post Posted November 2, 2012 I dont know much about whats ethical to who or who decides what laws are ok and ethical and what laws are not but i do know that i shot a very small coues buck on opening day of the archery season. You'd have to try to find a smaller buck to ever find one smaller. I did it spot and stalk. Ive killed many deer big and small but hes by far the smallest and the buck im the proudest of, and dont care who does not like it.

A 3 point rule would leave him out? Really? And a 2 point is the biggest I've shot (but much smaller than that one)!

Nontypical183 Report post Posted November 2, 2012 I know new mexicos rules the two point with eye gaurds is a legal animal which in turn leaves the 109 buck and that gene pool open for grabs a mature deer is recognizable i have harvested small deer in my life and im not ashamed of them but as anything in life i try to progress i think juniors should be excluded from the rule to avoid discouragement but i know i have a 14 year old boy with a 24a mule deer tag and i will not let him tag a spike i have been scouting and there are plenty of deer three or better and if we come home empty handed then he learned what to hunt is hunting is not about killing
