reganranch Report post Posted October 31, 2012 We were absolutely positive it was a buck. Brother could see horn in the binos and I could see horn in the 24 power scope. We also knew that we were the only people in there as there is only one road in and out and we were the only ones on it. I never set out to prove something on this hunt just wanted to fill a tag in the limited amount of time I had for the hunt. Well said Stomp, whats the scope/rifle combo you have pushing tacks? What LRF are you using G7. Lecia, Swaro? Great kill, and shot man good luck to you the rest of the fall.

nighthawk Report post Posted October 31, 2012 Yeah that's really impressive shooting. But would you have gone up to find the deer if you had made a bad shot, or weren't sure? What if there was someone between you and the deer? That's really irresponsible and just done to show off. It should be saved for the range/competition. Yup I done pissed you guys off but there it is. One more question - were you sure it was a buck at that range or were you just trying to prove something. Those binocs are awesome but . . . So is a 100yrd running shot more ethical? Always has to be a grumpy guy out there doesn't there.. Congrats on a great shot!!!' Most people shoot factory ammo with a 5 inch group at 200 and call it good , as a hand loader I understand the work u put in to get a great load. Don't let anyone rain on ur parade cause a 1200 yrd shot is amazing!!! IMO getting closer is for archery.

STOMP442 Report post Posted October 31, 2012 We were using a leica range finder and the rifle is one that I built. It is a 6.5-284 built on a savage action with a 26" Criterion barrel. The Amax worked really well it penetrated the whole deer at that distance so no recovery of the bullet. But it don't take a whole lot to penetrate 6" of little tiny coues. Small hole going in and one about the size of a nickel on the way out. I would say that it performed just fine. The deer was dead in a matter of seconds what more could I ask for. rcdinaz Report post Posted October 31, 2012 Great shot! Ignore the complainers, if you have never practiced and shot long range with a purpose built rifle you have no clue. It sounds like you know what you are doing, know your rifle, and I am pretty sure you would have made the hike to find the deer I would have because practicing long range turns you into an optimist since you know what you are capable of. I would be willing to bet more deer are wounded at short range or in brush than at long range by people who have practiced for those conditions. When you practice at those ranges you are patient, have clarity of mind to know all of the conditions around you, and you wait for the right shot. Can you miss sure thing, but pretty much all of the deer I have seen that were not recovered were close not far shots. All that being said that is a long shot, as long as my longest practice sessions on targets. Great shot!

Sorry mr perfect there are other ways of hunting then the way you do. To each his own and congrats to the hunter on getting his buck..

scoutm Report post Posted October 31, 2012 We also knew that we were the only people in there as there is only one road in and out and we were the only ones on it. Amazing shot for sure. I would never have expected a AMAX to be a through and through at that range. I may have to reconsider it for my .264WM. I would, however caution you on being so certain there was no one else in the area because there's only one road in/out. We too hunt in an areas that only has one road in and based on your picture our area is MUCH rougher and to our suprise there was a spike camp well beyond us. There was no evidence they were in there but they were so I again would just caution you as there are some tough SOBs that go to great lengths to get away from other hunts. Again, amazing shot.
