ctafoya Report post Posted October 30, 2012 I finally(with the help of a friend who is a glassing wizard) shot my first deer. I got shot him just before last light and we had no way to recover him till morning. When we got to him he was nice and cool. Was in the low 40's that night. But it was a gut shot. The meat looks good. No discoloration but it smells like the buck did while we were dressing him out. Nasty. Is the meat still good? If it is will the smell affect the taste? If i make jerky outa him will that help? Any pointers are greatly appreciated.
GotBowAz Report post Posted October 30, 2012 I think the 2 things I would do is thoroughly wash the meat and then remove a thin outside layer. Anything came in contact with your hands, hide or hair I would cut off. Anything inside should be fine. If it still smells its probably spoiled although i kind of doubt that. Shouldn't have went bad over night. By the way, you got pic's of your harvest??
