reganranch Report post Posted October 25, 2012 then do it and dont post. they are not native to AZ. good ole days? This Jaguar was shot in the Rincon Mountains east of Tucson in 1902 Also there were 53 Jaguars either killed or photographed in Arizona from 1900 to 1996. And since 1996 there have been even a few more confirmed sightings. Jaguars were hunted all over the state of Arizona. Several were killed on the White Mountain Apache Reservation, there were a few killed in the Prescott area, as far north as a female jaguar at the Grand Canyon, and multiple ones in southerna AZ. And of those there were at least 7 females, including a female with a cub killed in the Chevelon Canyon area, and a Female with 2 cubs killed in the Chiricahuas. Sightings of Jaguars go back even further than this. Also Fossil records show that North America, including California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Florida have always been known to have populations of Jaguars. So to say they are not native is a strech. Try picking up the book, "Borderland Jaguars", by Brown and Lopez. Great book with all sorts of stats and records. Great post Lance! Just imagine how many Jags there were before 1900 during the Over Exploitation Era when everyone had the idea of superabundance of N. America has a whole. People thought that the abundance of animals could never go away no matter how much hunting was done.
ready2hunt Report post Posted October 25, 2012 I have read too, that archeologists have found the remains all over the Southwestern United States that the American Lion (The largest of all cats) was native here as well and for whatever reason the Jag. survived but the lion did not. They suggest that Jags and lions both preyed upon bison/deer/elk and mammoths. Gotta love the Southwest Museum. About 8 years ago I was doing some work in a few towns about an hour south of the border. A few of them had Jag pelts.....They are native to this whole area. -Great Info Lance
PRDATR Report post Posted October 25, 2012 If I remember they paraded it around town and then found out it was illegal and it mysteriously disappeared.
SilentButDeadly Report post Posted October 25, 2012 Awesome photos! I've got a soft spot for Jags in AZ - I dream of the day when sportsmen have recovered them and made their hunting legal so I could launch an arrow at one! I about cried when I watched this episode of Jim Shockey's The Professionals - the jaguar they were looking to green dart killed all six of the guides dogs! https://184.169.131.151/preview/2042_jim-shockey-s-the-professionals_paraguay-project-jaguar http://www.jimshockey.com/publisher/jims-blog/2011/5/8/paraguay-jaguar-project-turns-tragic

Those jags are much more aggrensive and powerful compared to lions. That jag killed each dog with one swipe or one bite. What makes it even more crazy is they were not hunting the jag, they were just trying to get data from the jag

azcodito Report post Posted October 27, 2012 http://dinets.travel...blackjaguar.htm Cool article related to Lances trailcam pics. Is it just me or does that picture look photo shopped? That Jag looks fat, like one you'd see in the zoo, and his feet don't seem to be touching the trail.
