bobbyo Report post Posted October 19, 2012 I just got back from burying my Beagle with my boys and needless to say I am heartbroken. I came home from work And was fiddling around the house when I noticed something wrong. My faithful shadow was not following me around. I went around looking for her and found her dead in the floor of the room. She was overweight but healthy and showing no sign of sickness at all. She has been eating normally and running around the house and the backyard like usual. My question is has anyone had a dog die so suddenly without warning? After the shock and a bunch of tears my mind started thinking maybe foul play might be involved. So I guess i need somebody to talk me down before I do something stupid with my neighbors. No sign of trauma or bodily fluids. Dog just looked like she was sleeping. Bob
stanley Report post Posted October 19, 2012 Sorry for the loss. That is a real drag. They can definitely die suddenly of natural causes, just like humans can. A buddy of mine had a dog that died very suddenly a couple of years ago. He was there when it happened, and said his dog simply stood-up whined a little for a moment and then fell over dead on the spot. The vet suspected a heart attack in that case. S. GotBowAz Report post Posted October 19, 2012 Oh wow, that's just sad, Im sorry to hear this and it brings back memories of my own. I had what I thought was a perfectly healthy husky and the same thing happened right in front of me. He walked up to me, put his head in my lap, made one little whimper and dropped dead. Same here, vet thought it was a heart attack. I had a rottie that also passed in front of me but he was 15 years old and the signs had been coming for a couple of days. he was by far the best loving dog I ever owned. It does happen suddenly and I would think if it was foul play you would see some kind of sign just before passing. hang in there dude and when you can get yourself another best friend. Sorry for your loss. GBA
naturegirl Report post Posted October 19, 2012 im so sorry for your loss. my sister lost a dog suddenly and she had a dog autopsy done. we live in the valley but she took him to Tucson for it. I never knew it was even an option before she did it. I don't remember how much it cost though.
PRDATR Report post Posted October 19, 2012 Probably just natural causes and dogs like people suffer from being overweight. Why do you suspect foul play? I know Beagles can be notorious barkers and that can definately be a major issue living in a subdivision. We just lost our Boxer but she was about 13 and her body just gave out. She went from being a 13yo puppy in the morning to stumbling and loosing the ability to stand by the afternoon. Vet said it was her time.

firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted October 19, 2012 When I was in college, I didn't come home for the first three months. When I did come home, I said hi to my mom and walked out back to see my dog. At the time he was something like 9 or 10 years old but in good health. I walked outside and he didnt come running up. I found him laying about 15 feet away on the porch dead. My mom had said she put him out side not 15 minutes before I came home and was telling him "Bubba is gonna be home soon" and she said he got all excited and was jumping around and barking excitedly. Then, 15 minutes later when I got home he was dead!
COOSEFAN Report post Posted October 19, 2012 dam, that and several other posts here are hard to read! Very sorry to hear about your loss Bobbyo! I had the same experience with my black lab, Zeus. All the way up to his last day he was very energetic and healthy but when I came home from work one day I immediately noticed he didn't come greet me and found the same thing. He was 9 years old but appeared healthy and without any issues. He just passed away and it appeared as though it happened in his sleep. I didn't have any autopsy done but was very curious why he died so suddenly without some sort of regression in health. I figured it was a heart attack and had several people tell me that's prolly what it was. I was thankful that it appeared to be quick and he never suffered through any painful issues. Get a new puppy Bobbyo, it helps a ton! JIM>

muleskinner Report post Posted October 20, 2012 My brother adopted a german shepherd from the local shelter. 2nd day with him and he walked up to the recliner, layed his head on my brothers leg, and dropped dead in his tracks. Heart attack, apparently. I lost a good hound to a tumor on his spleen. The vet cut him open and the tumor was the size of a soccer ball. Tough to lose a good friend like that. Snapshot Report post Posted October 21, 2012 Sorry about the loss of your friend. I have lost a half dozen dogs over the years, but always after an illness. Never suddenly. I guess all we can hope for. is a quick and painless passing for our pets. They are our friends, and companions. All good dogs go to heaven.
Coues 'n' Sheep Report post Posted October 21, 2012 Sorry Bobby... we all share your pain... Our Pals mean alot to many of us. I would focus on the good past and not the how... probably just natural causes, but even if you determined that it was not it won't bring any compfort. Best way to go is sudden in my book... no pain, I hate to see any critter suffer... and that goes double for Dogs. March on, you will need to fill that hole in your heart and house soon... I found that a new addition was the best medicine for that.
