Youth cow hunt

Recommended Posts

Any cows take a dirt nap yet? Can't wait to hear the stories and see the pictures. I love these youth hunts, but am running out of kids to take.

Just hear from my buddy hunting with his nephews up in 5A. They woke up to rain which later turned into snow. He said the elk weren't moving but they still managed to get one cow this morning. Might have gotten two but the other nephew wouldn't get out of his sleeping bag... He isn't a member on here so I'll post some pics for him when he sends them.

I'm in desperate need of some pictures to get me thru this work day. Let's see some success pics and hear a few stories.

We just got back from my daughters jr cow hunt but we were not able to connect. Weather had the elk hunkered down opening day, but saturday and sunday were great. Seen elk everyday and came very close both days. My daughter just was a second slow getting set before they busted. She never got frustrated and took a bad shot. I'm proud of her for not rushing things and taking a bad shoot even though she had the opportunity. Seen some big bulls and she is now talking about only wanting to bull hunt! If she had a bull tag she would have had several shot opportunities at huge bulls. Lots of fun and memories but no pics.

Huge thanks to the two guys in the red truck who stopped and helped us out when we had a flat tire. Hope the advice on the jr deer hunt they had helped.

After my son's game on Friday (Desert Ridge beat Mesa!!!) we left for 3C. my son is now 16, so this was an "advanced" junior hunt... one of our best hunts together!

Arrived at camp at 1:00 AM. thank goodness I recently switched to a cab over camper...15 minutes later we were trying to get to sleep... it was hard to fall asleep because bulls were SCREAMING all night. We had one bull no more than a couple of hundred yards from camp and he was LOUD...as daylight approached the elk moved into the canyon...we headed out...cool crisp morning. Frost on the ground with crystal clear skies.

A good friend glassed up a bunch of elk with multiple bulls screaming, then another bull came over a closer hill with his herd in tow... we moved within 458 yds, dialed the scope to match the yardage, Tyler got into the prone position shooting off the bi-pod and pack supporting the stock, he took his time and let one shot rip from the 300 WSM. Flopped this big gal over.... done at 7:10. The bull stayed there screaming at us for about 10 minutes....

I quartered her up...thank goodness my son is older and all those days lifting weights paid off...he carried two quarters out in no time, my friend carried one... and I carried one (however I almost had a heart attack...LOL)...back at camp at 10:30...

Listened to the college games, drank a few cold ones...needing to sit in the sun as the day stayed cool..... that night the bulls were still screaming. Woke up in the am to...you guessed it...screaming bulls, walked a hundred yards from camp, glassed three bulls bugling at each other.... then reality set in....packed up and back to home....today was a LONG day.

My youngest son was also able to be there, he will be 9 in Nov...one more year for him and he will be hunting!

I have often made the drive to elk camp after a Friday night varsity game. It makes for a rough Saturday morning, but still a great time. Congratulations Tyler on a nice cow, and 458 yards...great shot!

On the phone with my little cousin all day giving them suggestions on where to go.....I am hoping she connects today. Said she saw 15 mulies (3 nice bucks) and 1 bear yesterday.

Said on their drive back to camp they had to stop on the highway before they hit 5 cow elk crossing the road (it was well past shooting hours).....what a heart break!
