rossislider Report post Posted October 7, 2012 Pictures from my family's outing up to Yellowstone this week. It was 11 degrees on this morning, but the mountains were alive with bugling bulls

rossislider Report post Posted October 7, 2012 Thanks, the highlight for me was the elk in the bottom picture. I was standing behind some trees about 15-20 yards from our Tahoe. My wife asked me to try to get him to turn and look at us. I have an elk bugle ring tone on my phone so I walked in front of the Tahoe, started raking a tree, and calling to him with the ringtone. He turned and studied me for a minute, probably not sure what to think. After a few moments he started bugling back. We had quite the conversation going for a few minutes before he eventually took his cows and disappeared into the trees. I had never before experienced anything like that within 20 yards! Just remember, bugling to elk in the park will get you in trouble with the Jellystone park rangers. Spent the last 2 summers up there. It is an awesome time of year, in, and around. Yellowstone. Yea, anything more than a cell phone ringtone and I probably wouldn't recommend it, not very loud and it is after all my text notification tone. Also, the park was almost empty. This is a great time of year to go and avoid the crowds!

Red Rabbit Report post Posted October 10, 2012 Must have been a great week with bugling elk, other wildlife and thermal attractions. Was smoke from all the fires a problem?
Alpinebullwinkle Report post Posted October 11, 2012 You did much better than our family when we visited Yellowstone 4 years ago. We saw 2 moose and no elk! The only elk we viewed were bedded in the town park of Mamouth.....kinda like we used to see in Alpine before the Wallow Fire. Guess the forest was too scary for the Yellowstone elk to be in the park with all those wolves running around! Isn't that an interesting message the elk are sending us......that they feel safer around humans than out in the scary woods with the wolves!
