elkhunter Report post Posted July 27, 2006 Well of course I've been chasing deer long before the draw came out, I knew my old man was going to get an Oct tag....but to my surpise I got another Dec tag in the area. Right now all the bucks I've seen are in the mesquite flats, and the tiny tiny spikes are up in the hills with their mom still. Does anyone notice that the bucks are not up in the mountains/hills during late june to july? I have trail cams up in the mountain tops in saddles and such and all I get are does and spikes...nothing close to mature bucks. During the october hunt we should probably expect these deer to be near the flats still.....right? Never done an oct hunt!! Dec tags just happen to fall into our hands the last 4 years! bowhuntinmaniac Report post Posted July 27, 2006 The mature bucks are in batchelor herds and will usually go where they have plenty of shade, feed and water. What unit did you draw?
elkhunter Report post Posted July 27, 2006 my good ole pig huntin unit...34B Yeah the older bucks we're finding are in groups of 2's or 3's the young spikes are paired with the hot mom's, i just figured they're in the flats where there's much more grass, tanks, and shade than the hills and mountain tops
TAM Report post Posted July 27, 2006 Some people swear by the October hunts. The bucks are still bachelored up and if you can locate them in the summer and get them patterned there's a good chance you can get a crack at them during the October hunt. Often by the time the November hunt rolls around the bachelor herds start breaking up and the big bucks are more difficult to locate until the rut.
