So sad what happened to agent Nicholas Ivie early this morning near Naco. RIP and hopefully his friends and family will find justice and peace. I sincerely appreciate all law enforcement officials who put their lives on the line every day.

On the thread mentioning this tragedy, the 'close our borders' debate was started. Casey made some comments regarding my question of 'how?', and I was sincerely interested in understanding more of it. Election time is here and I feel like this should be a big topic. However, I haven't heard much about it yet. Maybe tomorrow's debate will offer some questions about it, especially with what happened today.

The response to my question of 'What more can we do?' from Casey was basically around money, technology, and the ability to execute on the job of being an agent without fear of breaking some kind of rule/code, etc... Seriously though, what does that mean? I'm thinking it means we need to have the best technology money can buy, and be willng to deploy it to the border. I'm also thinking that maybe there should be some reform in the policy/proceedures that our agents must follow. What reform is necessary though? Specifically, how are the agents hands tied? Is that the answer, or is it a big ol' fence?

I'm hoping this thread can stay positive in nature. I'm honestly and sincerely interested in what some of the answers may be.....

Thoughts? Comments?

PS: Casey, Scott, and ALL other BP agents and all others in law enforcment. THANK YOU FOR YOUR WORK!

You know the priorities are screwed up when the BP agents own union has to sue the Fed Gov't to allow the agents to do their job.

Use Border Patrol and Military personell to guard the border. Advertise in Mexico for 3 months that the U.S. will no longer give free rides to law breaking illegal foreign citizens of any type. Let the sign read," If you cross into the U.S. illegally we will engage with lethal force", and after about a week of stolen U.S. diesel trucks trying to outrun Apaches before being taken down it would stop. It's a war zone down there and to admit its not is being naive and putting your head deep in the sand. It we were do the Job right we would not allow a Mexican town to be established within a couple miles of the US in order to prevent tunnels and drug warehouses from being built across the street. If that severes our little ties we have with the crooked Mexican Goverment, seal the border completely. South Korea keeps illegal immigration in check with North Korea no reason why the strongest nation on earth can't keep them out.

I just talked to a person that was on scene last night. This was just a bad situation.

The solutions lie at the policy levels. We need a change in president, upper administration, and political will. We currently have a lot of really good people on the ground that are not allowed to do their job. Current political agenda do not lend themselves to allowing our well qualified agents to do their jobs.

Start with decisions like what just happened in Pennsylvania where a judge ruled against picture voter ID.

That is setting up the boots on the ground for failure.

My grandpa was rocking in a rocking chair on the back porch and rocked right over the cats tail, right up next to his rear.

It was decided that we would need to cut the cats tail off to save the cat. My little brother who loved the cat wondered if we couldn't just cut a little at a time off saving the cat pain.

The thinking was that because a little was taken off, little pain.

Grandpa in his wisdom, grabbed the ax and chopped the tail off right above the infected area.

It was painful alright, but still the best decision.

It ain't gonna be pretty, and some people that have gotten really comfortable in this country are going to get uncomfortable.

Let the people on the ground doing the work, do their jobs, give them weapons instead of bean bag guns.........enforce the laws and require people here in the states to show they belong here.

Just tryin getting into the Cardinals football game without a ticket and see where that gets ya........

Both really good points Pine Donkey and Non Typical, IMO....... Work on the policy at the top and at the same time let the heros on the ground do their jobs with the right tools (and trust them to do their jobs without extreme scrutiny....)!

How to do that though? Lobbying? Grass roots (seems like that falls on deaf ears....)?

I think NON_TYPICALSOLUTIONS nailed it on the head with his 545 vs 30000000 post or whatever he titled it!!!! I am by no means a political follower and don't know any of the mumbo jumbo when it comes to all the politics but I would think that our nation would (COULD, SHOULD) have the capability to control one border!!! The problem IMO is all the people running the government DON'T WANT to fix it. Simple as that. All these controversial issues/problems in every topic (NOT JUST THE BORDER) is made up just to point fingers at the other side. If everything was fixed what would they argue and campaign about. The problem can be fixed if we had the RIGHT people to fix it. who they are and how to do that???? I don't know.

Our Nation has become blindfolded, soft, and naive. Start laying down the law!!! Start making people pay the price for what they have done or are doing, whatever it takes. Quit tippy toeing along with all these politician's so called agendas.

How many lives is it going to take? IT SHOULD NOT BE ANY!!!

With all our technology and resources, this so called BORDER ISSUE, should NOT EXIST!

The biggest problem is the Democrats want the minority votes, and the Republicans want the cheap illegal labor for businesses. It;s a no win situtation.
