Universal trail camera kit

Recommended Posts

Im thinking about getting my first Trail Camera, but Im not sure what to get. Im leaning toward the Universal Digital Trail Camera Kit that uses the olympus D360L by Pixar. Does anyone have any expierance with this kit or any advice on another kit or camera that would be better to get. Thanks guys I really appreciate the help.

Adam,

Do you mean the Pixcontroller universal kit? I'm currently building a Sony S600 on that board and will let you know how it turns out. The Olympus D360L is a plug and play camera from what I understand but are getting hard to find. The Sony has to be "hacked" in order to function as a trail camera, but is a new camera with a strong flash and 1000ISO. It should take some outstanding pics if I don't burn it up making the connections ;)

I have two that a buddy made for me from the pixcontroller kit with the olympus 360's and one with the same kit and camera that I put together myself. They work great and take good pictures as long as you are fairly selective in the set up so you don't end up with a lot of landscape pictures from grass or trees blowing around once the sun has warmed them up. They are pretty easy to set up and get going since they are indeed plug and play cameras. A few solders on the circuit board and a couple of well placed holes in the case and you are up and running. I do suggest going with the pelican 1060 case instead of either of the two cases offered on pixcontroller.com because of space taken up with the camera, board, and battery. You can pick one up on cases4less.com. As for the camera being hard to find you can still get them off of e-bay pretty cheap.

Good luck,

Phil

I made one exactly like those described here - D360-L camera, RSS-232 board, pelican 1060 case. It's a great trail camera. I would not suggest paying extra for the "camo dipped" cases pixcontroller sells. The clear ones make it really easy to get your holes in exactly the right spot, then a little camo spray paint and you're in business. If you don't want the paint smell on it for this year, just get some camo tape (not the shiny camo duct tape, but the good cloth kind).
