Aspen Time

Recommended Posts

One has to enjoy this time of fall when the aspens are turning and the elk are bugling. This past Saturday I hiked up into the Inner Basin on the San Francisco Peaks to photograph the changing aspens. A coupe of bull elk were bugling before sunrise, but only one remains as one succumbed to an early rifle hunter from Nevada. Congratulations to him.

A view of the Inner Basin, the well houses for Flagstaff's water pipeline and morning's red light on Agassiz.

The hike back down the trail took a few hours as I spent considerable time in a colorful aspen grove.

There were many people on the trail Saturday enjoying the splendor. I think that by next weekend, many leaves in Lockett Meadow and Inner Basin will have fallen, but the slopes near SnowBowl on the west face of the peaks will be getting colorful. I presume that the White mountains in eastern Arizona are getting prime also.

I know that the hike up there took my breath away ;)

Tomorrow morning should be a good day to go as there will be hardly anyone during the week and the leaves will not have fallen yet. Take the trailhead at the southern end of the day use area, and not the old road on the west side of the parking area. The nice aspen grove starts about 30 minutes up the trail. Beautiful hike.
