quailchaser Report post Posted July 26, 2006 Folks, I have hunted 24B the last two years in December for Coues. I have seen a couple of nice deer, but I have never been able to connect on them. (Not monsters, but just good deer.) I drew a 24B November tag this year (my second choice). My question to the board is would you expect to see the deer higher up than they are in the December hunt? (The area I hunt is about 5,000 feet.) I am excited, but I know that this is a tough unit. I'd like to hear what anyone has to say, opinions, etc. I am e-scouting, but I plan on also putting in a lot of footwork. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks! stanley Report post Posted July 26, 2006 Welcome to the site QC! There are certainly much more knowledgeble folks around here than I, but my guess is that the deer will not necessarily be higher in November. I'm thinking they'll just be a little harder to find since they won't be rut/pre-rut in Nov.... If you've found an area with some deer in December, I would say to start your scouting there and glass, glass, glass! S. PS: You'll find there are a couple of other 'quail chasers' on this site as well. Me included!
TAM Report post Posted July 26, 2006 I've spent a ton of time in 24b. The deer will be in the same general areas as your December hunts. Coues deer aren't real migratory and for the most part you will find the bucks in the same areas you find them in the summer. There are coues deer in that unit from 3000 foot elevation on up, so don't rule out some of the lower more traditional mule deer areas. I've even seen a few at 2800 ft.
