DEF110 Report post Posted September 25, 2012 Rem 700 270 Win 19" barrel I had a muzzle brake installed on it 5 years ago for my sons first elk hut. The muzzle brake was done very badly so I just had it cut off with a 11% target crown and it is now a 19" barrel. I used Rem 150gr Core-Locks in it up till now. I Just started reloading for the 270. I am using RE17, 140gr Berger vld, rem and win brass, CCI large rifle primer. I am starting with max load from Berger load data and working down with RE17. Max is 51.5gr and working down to 49gr in .5 increments. Loaded 5 rounds each to see how they do. I will post my results as soon as i shoot them at the range. I hope the chronograph at the pima range is working so I can get better data. I hope the short barrel will not hurt the muzzle velocity to bad and will have the range and power to kill out to 600 yards. 49.5gr RE17 50gr RE17 50.5gr RE17 I like this group its a 5 shot group 51.5gr RE17 I will redo this load as I shot a 51 gr in with the 51.5 group and the guns was hot but didn't want to go another round at the range and shot them just after the 51gr group. but like some of the groups
PRDATR Report post Posted September 25, 2012 Is this 100 or 200 yards? I see you didn't post any muzzle velocities but what about pressure signs at your max load, were there any? The 50.5 gr grouping is a nice one.

The 50.5 gr grouping is a nice one. Someone shot the chronograph on Saturday at the range so Sunday I could not get any muzzle velocities. It was at 100 yards for now will move to 200 next time and see how well the group stays together. No signs of over pressure at max load. I email Berger for load data and they sent me data for 130gr,140gr and 150gr hunting VLD. They used a 26" barrel so I thinking the muzzle velocities will be different with my 19" barrel. I went with the RE17 because of the fill ratio of 87%
PRDATR Report post Posted September 25, 2012 I would expect a muzzle velocity of around 2750-2800fps with a 19" barrel.
roninflag Report post Posted October 1, 2012 i would try H/I 4350 and 210gm primers. Trigger adjusted?
DEF110 Report post Posted October 1, 2012 Yes it has a 3.5 lbs timney trigger that I had done at the same time as cutting the muzzle brake off. Is that IMR 4350? And why do you suggest that powder? Is it a quicker burning powder than the RE17 for the shorter barrel?
STOMP442 Report post Posted October 1, 2012 Shoot for group at 200 yards. Berger Bullets tend to need a bit more time to stabilize and groupings at 100 yards can be discouraging but at 200 quite good.

loco4coues Report post Posted October 30, 2012 Worked up a load in my .270 with the Bergers as well. 58.7 grains of RL 22. 150 grain VLD, 24 inch barrel, Weatherby vanguard S1, bedded and floated. My best group with the load is 3 shots in the same hole and the fourth just outside, this was at 100 yards. Killed my buck with it on Friday at 358 yards. Worked wonders. sherman Report post Posted December 12, 2012 I use imr 4831 cci 200 primers 130 gr hornandy sst. Here is whycall it funny dumb or use it but I get sub moa grups every time. I use 130 gr bullets everytime because that was the weight bullet the .270 was made to shoot. I even saw a guy kill a musk ox with 130 gr bullet. I use imr 4831 because the load book said it shot the best and it did. I hope this will help you
