The wisdom of a kid

Recommended Posts

I talk to people all the time about worldly events like geography,

history, economics, monetary policy and national debt.  So often I am

left shaking my head at the lack of understanding the average person

has about these subjects.  In addition to the lack of general

knowledge held by so many, there is a very scary wave of apathy

beginning to overtake our nation.

As I sat here tonight in despair, wondering about our future, my 18

year old son Garrett gave me a glimmer of hope.  He put our debt in a

perspective that few Americans have the intellect or desire to

understand.

He said, "Dad, I've been thinking.  Light travels at 186,000 miles per

second.  That means that it can travel around the earth 7.5 times each

second.  So, if each mile were worth a dollar to our government, it

would take almost three years to payoff our national debt".  I quickly

did the math and he is right on.  He followed with,  "If this

continues, we will never be able to pay it off.  Why don't very many

people care about this."

What will it take for the average American voter to have the insight

of this carefree high school kid?

Now if we could just get him to see the value of putting his dirty

clothes in the hamper rather than throwing them on the floor...

We are such a great country, that we do not need to pay back our debt. We just make more money when we run out. It is so simple. Why don't the Republicans understand? ;)
