Scooter Report post Posted September 24, 2012 OK guys... Being from the northeast I never needed anything longer than a 40yd pin... That meant the 3 pin sight that came on my bow was good enough. Well, I'm in AZ now- and to get a shot at 40 yards would be a blessing! I shifted my 3 pins around so that I'm good out to 55, but I am capable, confident and want to shoot longer than that. I saw a good deal online and I now have a 5 pin sight. My question is: What yardage do you set your pins at to gain maximum distance without leaving too much of a yardage gap requiring hold over/under??? I was thinking of setting them at 25, 35, 45, 55, and 70... What do you think???
bear402 Report post Posted September 24, 2012 I set my first pin at 30 yards . Then in 10 yard increments from there. 30 40 50 60 70. It all depends on what you can keep straight in your head under pressure . It's 10 yard increments for me with 5 yard split gaps. Bow speed will effect what your gaps need to be too. bigorange Report post Posted September 24, 2012 I hear you...I grew up hunting in TN where 40 was a long shot from a treestand. I set my first pin at 30...just don't do like I did on my first shot and forget to hold a little low at 25!
JLW Report post Posted September 24, 2012 I was set at 30 40 50 60 70, went back to 20-60 for sitting the blind now I need to switch back. push that 25 pin up to 30. 55 - 70 is a big gap and being off a little at say 25yds becomes huge at 55-70 yds. easier to judge pin gap at shorter yardage. Try it out at the range and see what is easier for you to judge. James
Scooter Report post Posted September 25, 2012 Thanks for the suggestions guys! Looking like I will bump that first pin down and start at 30. Pretty sure my December and January hunts will be spot and stalk anyway...

Pretty sure my December and January hunts will be spot and stalk anyway... After you set that 30 pin, try a a 20 yard shot ! Most likely you'll still be in the kill zone assuming your bow has average speed... Train yourself to aim two or three inches low on those 20's and you'll be spot on..Even if you forget to aim a little low in the heat of the moment , you'll still be in the vitals. Good luck with the December, January Hunts

My old sight was set with 25yds being the top pin which was deadnutz on at 20 and had very minimal drop at 30. I'll use the same index mark on the riser with the new sight to start with. Thanks! double lunger14 Report post Posted September 30, 2012 I go 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 95.... Kinda weird but it works well for me. Just takes a lot of practice to be consistent at the longer yardeges.
