Pre Season Scouting

Recommended Posts

Just curious as to how often all of you get out during the pre season to scout or what not?

I personally average about 3 saturdays per month just going out to check my cameras, looking for good areas for treestands, and keeping my eyes split for sheds and animals. I'd be out right now but I am at work.:)

Man do I envy You. I live in Ca., and my preseason scouting is maybe one or two trips to AZ. if I get lucky. I pretty much have to rely on past hunting trips and whatver scouting trips I have made during the year before the season. However, I personally believe that Coues whitetail do not have as big of a range as you might think.I am guessing one to five square miles. I have no scientific facts to back this up but I am sure Amanda could probably shed some light on that theory. I usually try to push back in to some new areas adjacent to the same old areas that I have always hunted. The majority of my actual scouting is done the first day or two of the actual hunt.I do hunt Desert Mulies here in Ca. and I scout them quite often. They have a huge range that basically follows the rain patterns and there super unpredictable. I think thats why I love Coues hunting so much, they are somewhat predictable, Thank God for that! :P Coues Addict

Being that Arizona is a "Draw for a tag" state, I will usually put in for a unit that I am fairly familiar with, and quit sure that this unit has some "Keeper" bucks.

Once I do get drawn, I plan my scouting trips. I will get out every-other Friday thru Saturday up till my hunt.

I don't go out if there is an active hunt going on in the area ,( not such a good idea to be out in the woods when lead could be flying) just my .2 cents

I like to hunt different units, in fact over the last seven years, I hunted in six different units. (I don't know... must be my severe Attention Deficit Disorder!) Once the draw is complete and I know which unit I'm hunting.. (mid July), I'll do a couple of "camping" trips in that unit over the summer. My wife enjoys camping, so its funny how our camping trips always end up somewhere in my deer unit for the fall! As the season draws near I'll try to get out at least three or four additional weekends and have at least 3 different "spots" picked out in the unit.

Another thing I do is go out during the Oct season (if I have a Nov. or Dec. tag). Not to hike and glass so much as to check out the deer camps and BS with other deer hunters. I've picked up a lot of valuable iunformation this way.

I didn't draw an AZ tag last year but my best buddy drew an Oct. tag. Knowing that if we spent the time at it and patterned a good buck he would have the chance at killing a whopper. We spent 39 different days out in the hills locating bucks that we wanted to pattern and once we narrowed it down spent a lot of time filming and patterning the bucks. I don't think a person can spend too much time scouting as evertime you are out you may learn a new thing, i.e. we found springs that we never knew existed that for years to come will be "honey holes".
