We Lost one of the good ones

Recommended Posts

Last night Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever died in a car accident. Larry was a dedicated family man who devoted his life to his family, friends, church and law enforcement. He also loved hunting and the outdoors. His passing leaves a huge hole in Cochise County, Arizona, and the Nation.

As a sheriff he did not let politics guide his decisions. He fought for the resources to protect the people of Cochise County at the County, State, and Federal levels. Please keep him, his wife Nancy, and all his family in your prayers.

Sheriff Dever was a good man well liked by his community and Department, I had the opportunity to meet him a few years ago on a Search and Rescue call in Cochise County.

My condolences to his family and colleagues.

Here is a statement from the Governors office:

Statement by Governor Jan Brewer

Grieving the Loss of Sheriff Dever

"Like all Arizonans, I was shocked to learn this morning that Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever had been killed hours earlier in a one-car accident while traveling in northern Arizona. True to form for this husband, father of six and grandfather, he was reportedly en route to meet several members of his family for a Fall hunting and camping trip in the Arizona high country.

"I had known Sheriff Dever for well over a decade, stretching back to my days with the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors. I'll remember him in his cowboy hat - soft-spoken and unfailingly polite, but firm in his beliefs and steady in his service to the law. In the truest sense, Sheriff Dever was a Western lawman and country gentleman.

"Arizona has lost a leader of more than three decades in our law enforcement community. My thoughts and prayers today - and those of Arizonans, I am sure - are with his wife, Nancy, their children, friends and colleagues as they cope with this terrible loss.

"In honor of Sheriff Larry Albert Dever and his 34 years of dedicated service to the State of Arizona, and for the peace of mind he has provided the citizens of Cochise County, I have ordered that flags at all State buildings be lowered to half-staff until sunset today, September 19, 2012, and again on his day of interment, for which services are pending."

Wow...... A reminder to ALL of us to be prudent and smart when choosing when to drink and what to do when drunk. I suppose this is a reminder that nobody, regardless of your age, profession, etc. is above reproach.

So sad for his family and friends! :(

And the winner is. (Stanley). My Money was on Another Member from New Mexico, but you beat him to it. Sure would be a shame for a bad choice to tarnish the service Larry gave our state and us. He took a shot to the Face by a shotgun in service to us. thats what i will always remember about the sheriff. I sure will not remember that he did anything less then try to make our Border lands safe for us.

Not sure what you mean by your comments, COUESAZ. I meant no disrespect to him, nor did I mean to tarnish his reputation.

I was simply trying to point out that this is a lesson for all of us. I enjoy a cocktail and/or a beer on occasion and this type of incident reminds me that I need to be prudent and safe when I do that, else I might leave my loved ones grieving or kill someone else. Anytime this kind of tragedy happens it should be a reminder to us all, IMO.

A needless loss of a man who will be hard to replace, regardless of the reasons why. Hopefully his family will be able to remember the countless acts of courage and the strength to stand for his convictions. Getting harder all the time to find people in public life who will resist the pressure to conform and compromise. What about his replacement??
