reganranch Report post Posted September 19, 2012 I will be the first to say what many are thinking...... I think hunting an elk with a .223 is unethical as heck... I know it can kill an elk, so can a 22 or a blow gun dart if it is perfect........ But....... I would never do it! My kids have a .243 and I am not sure I would let them use it on a cow hunt. Sensationalizing using a tiny bullet to kill an elk.??? Not a good idea Whitey Also looks like there might be a few holes in her? Ya i've seen a few holes in elk with big calibers too! That has nothin to do with it. Guarantee there will be people in November taking Texas Heart shots on elk.
psebowhunter Report post Posted September 20, 2012 I happen to know the young man that shot this elk and can tell you that there was NOTHING unethical about it. Different strokes for different folks ! He comes from an extremely ethical hunting family and would not do it unless he was 100% sure that the the harvest would be quick and clean, if the man says it was a single shot kill, than it was a single shot kill. What is wrong here is everyone wants to turn into Jacoby and Myers !!!!!! .. Congrats to you Justin, hope to see you do it again !!! My $.

My $.02 I agree, his marksmanship is up to snuff and he got the job done. My question to him was bullet and wound channel. A monolithic bullet out of a .223 weighing 60 - 70 grains would hold up and penetrate well. My only suggestion to anyone wanting to take larger game with "light" calibers is to:

Again, congrats on getting it done in a "limited op" area.
hunter1026 Report post Posted September 20, 2012 Before the hunt I tested the bullets I used by strapping 12" of magazines together with the first one being the cabelas hard cover master catalog and we got 9" of penetration into solid paper and the bullet held most if its weight.....also I shoot a coyote from chest the a** end and had a complete pass through with devastating results ( I know elk are wag different than dogs)
