School the uneducated (I'm guilty) on this. What does "liking" do for the site?

It basically creates a connection between you and the page you like, so that you can receive notifications about new content added to the page in your newsfeed on FB. For the page you like, it helps spread the word because when you "like" it, there is a post on your fb page that let's your friends know you like it and they might be prompted to go check it out.

A story about your like will appear on your Wall (timeline) and may also appear in your news feed.
