mulie hunter Report post Posted July 24, 2006 Alright first of all I'm primarily a bow hunter who hunts mule deer. I put in with 3 buddies for deer we got our 5th choice Oct. unit 35a. The last time I hunted whitetail was 12 years ago in unit 32. Were in trouble never hunted 35a, not experienced coues hunters. Need some starting points for preseason scouting. Can a mule deer hunter enjoy whitetail hunting?????

COOSEFAN Report post Posted July 25, 2006 Hey Mulie hunter, first congrats on your tag, there are some bruisers in that unit, but it's a hard early hunt in my opinion, but can be done! I only know the SW part of the unit, but I have seen some monsters there, but not a lot of deer overall where I hunt. The SW part but stay east of the Mule deer/antelope type country and you'll find Whitie's, when you see it, you'll know what I mean. Just promise me one thing, if you go out and shoot a 113" buck on your first day of Coues Deer hunting, please don't go telling everyone that "Coues deer are too easy, I'm going back to Muley's from now on!" That's what my Bro-n-law did! Here's his buck. JIM>
mulie hunter Report post Posted July 25, 2006 Thats a nice buck! If I did that on the first day of the hunt, i'd know it was luck, or some good preseason scouting or both. Been hunting too long to consider any big game easy. thanks for the info. when you say sw part of the unit are we talking around parker canyon lake thru that area, I'm planning my first scouting trip in Sept. KGAINES Report post Posted July 26, 2006 mulie hunter I have seen some in the parker canyon lake area, I have seen them from parker canyon lake all the way to the coronado memorial, watch out for the US/ Mexican border south of the lake, it is closer than you think and isn't well marked, south of the lake I have seen a few but that is the grasslands where you will also find antelope, there are also mulies in that area too. Good Luck

Bryson Bendall Report post Posted July 27, 2006 Congrats on the draw mulie hunter! well i've hunted the area (primarily the front and back side of the huachucas and the area around parker lake for about the last 8 years and this will be the first fall in a long while that i wont be hunting there ( i'll be busy slaving away at college, oh and hunting as much as possible over by thatcher). So basically I'll tell you that the huachucas are chalk full of nice shooter size bucks, and according to what i have seen there are always tons of spikes and forks and a few 3 to 4 points in every canyon, north and south side. About every canyon has one or two 90inch bruisers too but of course around october they completely dissapear and you wont see them until the rut or maybe even the next spring. To be honest the october hunt is tough, but you will see deer in the hills and you will see bucks, quality bucks probably not but maybe. The parker lake area is absolutely full of deer as well, however they are a little harder to rifle hunt I think because their aren't many great vantage points to get up on. But what you might want to try to do is get out during the august-september archery season. That is when i have had the best success at seeing nice quality size bucks, especially over by parker canyon. We are talking about 30 deer a day, 5-6 bucks 1 or 2 of them shooter size. But of course get out and scout your tail off find those vantage points, glass the canyons and glass some more, and when your done with that, glass some more. Sorry about rambling on so long but 35a is my cup of tea. good luck, Bryson

Mulie, you are crazy man! big old fat necked mature mule deer buck, gag, you can have them all! nice big coues bucks are so much more beautiful. check out the one I took in New Mexico last year and you will know what I am talking about. also, a coues buck will typically not stand around watching you while you shoot at it. i havent hunted a lot of carp but the ones i have been around didnt act to smart. i know the big old ones though didnt get that way by being stupid. last spring my dad and uncle were down around the coronado national monument and they saw a couple real nice coues bucks. good luck! mulie hunter Report post Posted July 27, 2006 C'mon Sundevil their not that easy, yeah I've had a few stop and look back to see what spooked them. But trust me come hunting season when they get pressured the big boys are tough. I can't agree that a big coues buck is more beautiful, though I've never taken one, who knows if the hunt is good I could become a fanatic about coues like some of you(I doubt it!).
