1gotaway Report post Posted July 25, 2006 Muskrat, I also drew the 34A tag for Oct. This is my third year in a row on that hunt. It is also my third year of coues hunting, so I am probably not the expert here. I got a good buddy that lives in Tubac that turned me on to it. I grew up hunting the north country. I can tell you one thing, I have seen a lot of deer in the previous two years. Quite a few solid bucks also. My first year our group was two for three and the biggest was 91". An awesome buck. Most of the hunters in this unit hunt very close to each other...my advice is stay away from them. doesn't take to much walking to get away from most of these guys. It seems that most will try and hunt up on the Santa Rita's. I wait for them to push the deer a little lower to us. Lots of great little canyons to glass, and each canyon has a ton of fingers hiding these suckers! We'll be down in the area a few times before the hunt and will have a 3/4 ton dodge and chevy, and a tent trailer with about 12" of clearence. Hope to run in to ya. Are you still working for a elec. testing firm? Which one? I am a project manager for a elec. contractor and do a lot of work on water and waste water facilities. COUESAZ Report post Posted July 31, 2006 Muskrat you drew a great tag for sure. You should not have a hard time locating a buck. I am with the guy that said to get away from every one. and to hunt the lower fingers those are some well used escape rutes in that area. I have set and watched it take place. I have watched a big old coues buck run clear out in the flats right past some mule deer and he was still moving fast when i lost site of him. Most of them will hold up when they think they are safe and far away , But not this guy. He turnd mule deer and headed for the low lands. If you have not spent any time down there. BowNut Report post Posted October 1, 2006 Bring your Blaze orange! I have hunted there for years. Brought my son there to hunt last year and was on a hill side glassing when a spike buck came running up behind us and stopped at less than 10 yards. Scared the heck out of us and my son started to stand up because he thought he was about to get run over. Then BOOOM!!! and the dust flew under the deer. Two guys were down in the not so flat flats shooting at the little guy and never saw us! I jerked him back down to the ground and yelled at the guys as one more shot rang out. Lucky for us it ran away before they shot again. Not saying it was because we were in 34a it can happen any were. After that I will not rifle hunt with out some blaze orange on.
